My first night with our puppy

Doseypup came home yesterday and she’s been a little star. I am totally in love. She had taken to her crate so well and slept in there from 10pm. I slept on the sofa next to her. About 2am she started howling. I took her out for a wee, she didn’t do anything but wanted to play. I didn’t play with her and tried instead putting her back into her crate. The howling started again so I got her out and slept with her for the rest of the night.

Did I do right, she’s still fine going in and out of her crate today. Is the howling just natural for her

Shes like a baby
Expect some sleepless nights to start with

Aaahhh sooo cute! I'd say yes, night time isn't play time. Our Samoyed has just turned 1 and she sleeps through except the odd wee, she's told 'sshhhuuussshhhh wee wee time' and she does go out and doesn't woof so she gets a small treat and back to bed again.
I'd suggest puppy pads and also keep slippers etc out of the way (we've a lot of lost soles lol 😂)

Yes they're babies and have just been used to sleeping with their litter in a big pile. She will be missing them and wondering where she is now.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/05/2023 08:23

No advice, as I'm a cat person. But omg she she absolutely the cutest thing ever!

I hate crates and would never cage any dog or pup. Mine sleep in my bedroom, have done since the first night.

We also have a cocker spaniel (I'm assuming from the pic she's a show cocker?) He's now 6 months but with the first few days of getting him, he would howl and whine in his crate. Your little one has been so used to sleeping with mum and siblings so it's likely a big shock for her! Just ignore her, I used to sleep downstairs with the crate so she could hear that I was there, she will soon settle. ❤️

Thank you so much for your replies, they are very helpful. Yes she’s a show cocker, I am head over heels! She’s settled into the family so well

What a beautiful puppy. Definitely completely normal.

First few days are the worst, a new puppy is like having a baby with the sleepless nights but it doesn’t last long.

As you did, let her out for a wee but don’t play with her. Straight back into the crate after. I don’t think crates are awful. You can put toys and blankets inside and over the top to make it cosy. My dogs have never been to toilet in their crates and we only keep them up until they’re fully toilet trained.

Enjoy your puppy time, they grow so quickly.

Thank you, I can’t believe how much I have fallen in love her, we lost our old lady in March and I have been so upset, she’s like a ray of sunshine that we needed.

You did the right things. She's a baby & needs comfort/cuddles. You wouldn't (I hope) ignore a baby crying & just leave it. So don't 'just ignore her' either.

be warned though, don't mix up 'settled in so well' with 'laying low in a new environment'. Or her natural, more confident, puppy behaviour will come as a shock!!

Doseydots · 14/05/2023 11:26

Ah thank you, I am waiting for the craziness to begin !

I would buy a heart beat puppy toy from amazon, my puppy had one in his crate from day one and snuggled up to it instantly and from about the 5th night managed to sleep for 5 hour stretches and at 14 weeks he managed to do a full 7.5 hours last night and he didn't wake us up we woke him.
