10 puppies unwell, only 3 weeks old.

My beautiful working springer girl had 10 pups 3 weeks ago, was a huge shock to everyone to have so many!. She is the most amazing mum, especially as its her first litter. Unfortunately, the puppies (at least half that we have seen) have diarrhoea. We know this is serious and have been to the vets. They are a little dehydrated because mum is trying to feed them all, so we are now helping out with feeding them some formula, they have been put on rehydration formula too and been wormed early so fingers crossed there is improvement over the next 24 hours. They are honestly the most beautiful babies and mumma deserves a medal. She is worked in the field and at competitions by my husband and 9 year old daughter but switches off to be the best family pet ever ❤️

What a champ! Hope the pups get well soon. Remember mum needs lots of food and drink as well feeding all those babies.

Thank you. Mumma is getting lots of food and water and lots of attention. My daughter dotes on her and my husband slept downstairs with her and pups for the first 14 days!

Mum is doing brilliantly. Such a natural. Feeding time is like a shark frenzy though! Will be weaning as soon as the runny bums are under control!

Hang in there.
I know it’s incredibly worrying, been there.
But that’s a lot of pups for her breed.
We bred Golden Retrievers and once had a litter of 14. Yikes.
Every litter you learn something new…

Lovely litter! We have had litters up to 16 pups per liter, different breed though. As mum has a big litter, we always added some dextrose to the water. Learned that the hard way when mum of our first litter almost slipped into a coma due to feeding her pups so continuously, even after we had started weaning them. She ended up fine luckily and had to wear a shirt so pups stopped feeding at her. Since then, we always added dextrose if there was a litter.

Thanks for the advice. Puppies are thriving and have started being weaned which they have taken to great. Diarrhoea now gone. Mum is tired and sore so we are continuing to help feed them to give her a break

Oh my goodness they are adorable! My springer came from a litter of 9, his mum was amazing as she is quite a slight dog anyway. So pleased they are all doing well (and can I please have one of them?!!)

First time outside today. Started weaning which solved the diarrhea. They are amazing. Mumma is grateful for a break!
