Has anyone got one and can tell me about them?

OP you could get a well-bred chihuahua or Pomeranian- they're a similar size if bred properly.

But do your research first. Make sure you know what's healthy and what isn't.

ShagratandGorbag4ever · 31/03/2023 06:29

'dog finding journey'😂😂😂

ErrolTheDragon · 31/03/2023 09:29

Don't take it personally, OP. Posters are often blunt on the Doghouse topic because they care about animal welfare.

There are lots of small dogs, avoid extremes (too tiny, too flat faced liable to breathing problems, dachshunds if their backs are too long).

Apart from not encouraging unscrupulous "breeders", you'll save yourself vets bills and heartache

🙄

Newpeep · 31/03/2023 10:27

Big dogs in small bodies. Prone to anxiety and therefore quite severe aggression. That said, a welll bred Chi is a delight. I know some who compete in agility 🙂

GCAcademic · 31/03/2023 10:33

People get cross at posts like this because they are sick of seeing dogs deliberately bred with painful and life-limiting health problems to supply idiots who want something dinky and cute looking.

AuntieMarys · 31/03/2023 10:33

Hideous little fuckers.

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/03/2023 10:34

Just don’t, please. This kind of dangerous inter-breeding because daft people think it’s cute needs to stop.

DysonBison · 31/03/2023 10:35

Teacup anything is a cast-iron guarantee of puppy farming. Every. Single. Time.

I'm looking for a non pure breed dog that should never be bred.

@girlladywoman - would you consider getting a rescue dog? Reputable rescues will help you choose the best dog for you and your circumstances, and should offer advice and support post-adoption, if necessary.

There are some lovely small dog breeds - and many breeds have breed-specific rescues, if you want a particular breed. And I win a prize for using the word breed the most times in one sentence!

VerityUnreasonble · 31/03/2023 21:38

A normal sized Chihuahua is very small! Mine is big by breed standard at he is more like 7lbs than 4-6lbs but he is still a tiny dog.

They can have a bit of a bad rep because they often get treated like toys rather than dogs but they are bright and energetic and if well trained and socialised they are lovely.

Readyforspringtime · 31/03/2023 21:38

Are there any small breeds that don't bark a lot, won't be fussed by a cat, and don't need very long walks?

Wolfiefan · 31/03/2023 21:51

What do you mean about should never be bred? I would either go rescue or work hard to find a reputable breeder of a pedigree you like.

Antigonads · 31/03/2023 22:05

Why your obsession with folk needing to get laid?

You sound a right charmer.

Zipettydooda · 31/03/2023 22:43

I had a small Yorkshire terrier years ago. She was apparently the runt but she ended up strong and sturdy, loved loads of exercise and surfing the heather in the Highlands. She could walk for hours.

An option if you like going for long walks OP.

My other 3 dogs over the years were small rescue dogs, all Chinese Crested, eccentric and cat -like.

My friend has a chihuahua but he’s a larger one and quite a character 😁

TheSandgroper · 01/04/2023 05:45

If you are wanting a small dog, look at a proper chihuahua, a Yorkshire terrier, Pomeranian, Papillon, silky terrier. I am sure others here can make further suggestions.

Do your research, look for a reputable breeder or refuge, find out how to avoid puppy farming and please look for something that can breathe properly.

Just to add - I didn't know that they weren't pure - just thought it was their name. I am just looking for a small dog for my small home (plenty of garden for those keyboard warriors). I am at the beginning of my dog finding journey and will be researching and asking advice for a year before I make my decision.

My go-to in response to a question would never be so rude 😂 Makes me laugh how unnecessarily angry people are 😂 Get some therapy or take some happy pills 😊

It is not "unnecessary" anger where animal welfare in concerned. Dogs advertised as teacup varieties will be coming g from irresponsible breeders and the dog will likely come with a number of health problems as it has been deliberately bred to be small.

If you are only looking for a dog because it is cute and small then please please reconsider whether a dog is right for you. They are a life changing commitment. If you have done your research and want to go ahead with getting a dog and feel you can offer a loving home but unsure which breed is right for you, why don't you tell us about your lifestyle etc. and people might be able to recommend a breed (although a lot of people will recommend rescues).

staciea31 · 01/04/2023 08:02

I have a chihuahua and she is tiny for her breed she is the most loving little girl I often believe she thinks she’s human , although I adore her and she is the best thing ever she is a lot of work although I wouldnt change anything about her she’s my little pride and joy 🥰
