My 1 year old rescue dog won't relax or sleep unless covered with a blanket, or in a fleece bag . He won't even sit on the sofa with his bag on his head ! Unfortunately he is incapable of getting himself in it by himself or covering himself with his blanket so cries or barks until you help him, even when he wakes in the night... its getting exhausting... help ??

Can you make him a den on the sofa? A den on his dog bed and a den basically anywhere he is likely to sit ? You can also buy soft dod beds with roofs and which could work and be moved from room to room?

Also have you tried those plug in scents for dogs it calms then? Or speaking with a dog trainer about how to build his/her confidence

rucomfy Fibre-Filled Medium Burrower Calming Dog Bed with Comfort Blanket - Machine Washable Jumbo Cord Pet Bed with Water Resistant Base - 70 x 85 x 20cm (Slate Grey)

MICOOYO Hooded Dog Bed Large - Cozy Donut Dog Blanket Bed for Doggie, Claming Pet Caved Bed for Cats Puppies (Large, Wheat)

Some examples I quickly looked at on Amazon have a look

Don't know how big your dog is but these could work

He is quite big and very stupid ! He has a plug in and we are working with a behaviourist over his anxiety. Most of the cave beds on amazon are too small and ones that fit him are £££££ and he chews holes in them... its just frustrating he can't insert his own head under a blanket... he can get it into all sorts of places it shouldn't be.

It's normal for dogs to want to nest or make a den but they should be capable of doing it themselves.

What about one of those beds with a built in cover for him? Like a doggy sleeping bag?

Suzi888 · 06/03/2023 08:15

What about a pillow? My dog likes to bury his head under one.
Would he tolerate a doggy sleeping mask? 🙈
Or could you fashion your own cave bed somehow using a sleeping bag?

Could he be cold? Maybe worth trying a coat or fleece.
We're in a similar situation, we have a lurcher with poor eyesight so he struggles to settle himself despite access to multiple expensive pitta-style dog beds, all of which are piled high with additional fleece blankets. He worked out how to sort of flick the blankets in the air and sometimes they land right but otherwise we do a lot of tucking in.

How can we pussibly advise without photos?

Bunnyishotandcross · 06/03/2023 10:41

Small pop up tent with a blanket inside?

Mrsjayy · 06/03/2023 10:42

Could you make him a den/hide with his blankets in his bed so he will put his head in it himself? Our late dog liked to be buried so we just had a load of fleece blankets in his bed so he could hide his head himself.

My 3 year old dog is like this. Fortunately as he's got older, he fidgets less in the night and doesn't really untuck himself any more, so putting the blanket over him at the beginning of the night is usually enough to last through.

What kind of blanket does he use? We've found heavier ones work better as they can't flick them off as easily.
