Dog boarding costs

Can anyone help?

We've just been offered the holiday of a lifetime for just over 2 weeks in June however we have never left our doggy before.

However looking on a few local sites where they include prices and it's come out at just over £1000 for the time period. Is this reasonable and just the going rate?

I appreciate I might be wayyyyy out of touch but this seems an awful lot of money and almost as much as the holiday itself!

Whereabouts are you OP, what sort of boarding facilities are you looking at, how big is your dog, and how many days exactly will they be staying?
My local place (Oxon) is 23 quid a night for a big dog, all in. FWIW.

mumasore · 22/01/2023 19:57

Would be 14 days, small cockapoo. We would prefer a home boarder as I don't like the thought of her alone in kennels. We are in Surrey

Mine is a similar price Fenella - I think it's £23.50 per night - so for two week holiday you would need 16 nights if you are including an extra day for dropping and collecting . I make that £376 - sounds pricey but I've never left mine for that length of time .

Sisisimone · 22/01/2023 20:03

We have a home boarder, she's fabulous and £20 a night.

£1000 for 2 weeks is ridiculous

shinynewapple22 · 22/01/2023 20:05

The kennels I use is a family run business - they seem to truly love the dogs and they get lots of cuddles . They also do day care so there are always plenty of other dogs for him to okay with . Nowhere near Surrey though so completely irrelevant . Sorry !

NorthernSpirit · 22/01/2023 20:05

We’re in Surrey.

We use ‘The Crazy Dog Hotel’ (google it) for boarding (the dogs board in the owners home & have free use of her swimming pool)! Our medium size girl loves it!

We pay £35 per night.

£1,000 for 14 days / nights - £71 a day is too much!

shinynewapple22 · 22/01/2023 20:06

That sounds amazing @NorthernSpirit !

For an extra £4 per meal the dogs get a home cooked meal!

Our girl loves it there!

mumasore · 22/01/2023 20:13

@NorthernSpirit it looks amazing!

Would definitely recommend. Natalie the owner is great, loves dogs. Our Vizsla (high energy & needy dogs) loves it there!

flagpole · 22/01/2023 20:14

@Sisisimone - can i ask how you found them and where you are based? I am looking for someone in the midlands as i would prefer home boarding for mine this summer but so hard to know where to start online!

gogohmm · 22/01/2023 20:22

I paid £14.50 a day last year and £9 for the cat

Eastereggsboxedupready · 22/01/2023 20:23

We pay £44 per night for 2 ddogs sharing an enclosed kennel (roof for dhusky!)..

mumasore · 22/01/2023 20:24

Thank you all. I did think they were a little steep glad it's not just me being out of touch. Lots of the ones directly around me make you pay extra for them having a walk per day (£16 more!!)

My dog goes to a lovely home boarder who charges £25 per night. He adores going. She takes him for 2 walks a day and sends me loads of photos.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 22/01/2023 20:35

Home boarders near me charge £30-£40 per night.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 22/01/2023 20:44

Around here, prices are roughly as follows:

Kennels - £15 per night.
Home boarders - £35 per night.
Sitting in your own home - £50 per night.

£71 per night for home boarding is extortionate!

Yayyayitsaholiholiday · 22/01/2023 20:46

@Sisisimone I’m a midland based home from home boarder. Feel free to pm me.

Yayyayitsaholiholiday · 22/01/2023 20:48

Sorry the above comment should have been for @flagpole

wheresmymojo · 22/01/2023 21:00

We're in Hampshire but near the Surrey border (near Farnham).

Home boarder is £20 per night...

£1k is insane!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 22/01/2023 21:04

It does sound a lot but it depends on what it includes. My friend charges GBP50 per day but that’s in her home and includes food - home cooked or raw (Unless there’s a specific diet in which case owner provides and the cost is less). She also guarantees the dog is boarded alone, which is important for some owners/dogs, she isn’t in the South East/London where I presume it might be more expensive and she will also work on areas of training if required (obviously that only really works if the dog is there for a week or more).

Riverlee · 24/01/2023 13:33

Can anyone message me with recommended home boarders who cover kent please? (And will look up Surrey one above).

Michellez123 · 24/07/2024 20:10
