My Puppy Doesn't Bark

I have an almost 11 week old lab puppy, who's been with us for nearly 3 weeks. He's turned our life into utter chaos, but is a lovely little thing. The whole time he's been with us though, he's only ever barked twice, literally a couple of woofs (both times when my daughter played her recorder 🤣) He doesn't bark at the door, when my children are playing loudly, nothing. Is that normal? I only ask as my in law's dog came over for a bit of puppy socialisation, and I heard their dog bark more in 10 seconds than I have my own dog bark in 3 weeks!

My lab barely barks. She whines and grumbles. When she does bark I think she even scares herself

My dog doesn't bark much because she knows it irritates me. She will bark once to go out if I'm not in the kitchen to let me know. Otherwise she will gently nudge my hand or stand patiently at the door waiting to be let out. If she ever barks in the night (rare) I know she's ill.

She does do hilarious dog 'chatting' sort of melodic howling when she's really happy or wants to let me know something - usually that it's time for a walk 😁

My dog doesn't bark. When he was a puppy, I thought he might be mute but turned out he's just very laid back (unusual for a chihuahua).
I've taught him to bark just to prove he can 😂

I've had 2 dogs. Neither barked.much.
First dog could, and when she did it was insanely loud. Rarely indoors though thankfully.
More recent dog barely made any noise. I think she scared herself if she woofed.

Also had a black lab, barked twice that I witnessed in his entire life.

Our last yellow lab barked twice in the 18 months we had her (guide dog in training); once when another dog ambushed her from above and once at fireworks. Both times she looked horrified.

My lab barely barks. She’s three now. She is very communicative and will bump her head against you leg when she wants to tell you something. She comes from a line of gun dogs and I wonder if there is a hereditary tendency towards quietness that’s been encouraged.

Her weakness is a flying fox, drives her nuts and she barks like a crazy thing. I’m pretty sure she thinks it’s some sort of giant dog frisbee.

Mine never made a sound until he hit his teenage period then he suddenly found his voice.

My border terrier who is nearly two doesn't bark . Just very chilled.

Our old lab never barked for years. When he was older, very rarely he would bark at other dogs.

First time he did it he was about 5, made us jump out of our skin as it was quite an intimidating bark for a normally placid and silent dog.

This was my dog. 18 months old and scared to bark. I found out that the person who had her previously punched her in the face if she barked.
We found so much out by people who saw our now dog in that home but didn't do anything to stop it. Until my daughter took dog and bought her here.
Oh now she barks at anyone, anything for any reason. Think that's the Belgian malinois in her .

Come to think of it , my parents' dog ( retired Guide Dog of GunDog heritidge ) never barked as a rule , only time was when there was an attempted break-in at her house (when she was an active Guide Dog)

Enjoy the peace! A dog who doesn't bark at the post etc is more pleasant to live with than one who does - I've had both!

Our lab didn’t really bark as a puppy except once one his first day when he frightened the life out of us. How could such a big, deep man bark come out of such a tiny puppy? 😂. He’s 20 months now and barks once to go out into the garden and once to come back in and he tries to bark at delivery drivers but it’s comes out as a whisper and they just laugh at him because he’s just not scary!

Mine has just started to do the odd half woof if someone comes into the house he doesn’t know and he’s one! He’s always been more of a jumper than a barker……..

My Lab didn't bark at all until he was almost a year old. Working gundogs should not be vocal; the tendency has been bred out of them, to a large extent.

Neither of ours barked when they were little, our pug barks for England now, our Alaskan Malamute doesn't bark loads but it hurts my ears when he does, he has a wonderful wolf howl though, it's hilarious and lovely!

That’s really interesting I didn’t know that

My 11 year old black lab (bred from working gun dogs) has never barked in his whole life.
He yips quietly in his sleep, but that's it.
I was told it is because noisiness is bred out of them.

I'm so grateful for his quietness, he's never barked at strangers or jumped up on anyone. After puppy years, about 2 years old, he was absolutely no problem to take to the pub or visiting someone's house. He is so chilled.
