Finding a cavapoo

41 replies

polopolopolopoo · 08/12/2022 10:24

I would really love to have a cavapoo puppy but no idea how to find a breeder. I know to steer clear of pets 4 homes, Facebook etc but how to find a reputable breeder when poodle cross not bred by KC reg breeders?

I want to do the right thing and not encourage puppy farms but where do I find a cavapoo puppy?

Thanks for any advice ☺️

I got my Maine coon cats from pets 4 homes. You just have to be vigilant and visit and be prepared to walk away.

@bunnygeek what a cutie 🥰 What's his temperament?

He’s a sweet little guy! He’s at that cheeky teen phase at the moment but he’s good with kids (as long as they don’t mind being knocked over because he’s excited) and was good to toilet train. Tibetans can be stubborn so he needs a reason to do the things you’re asking of him haha!

Hopefully he’ll be better with his sister as they get older, at the moment they can’t be together because they get so excited playing biteyface they don’t stop, there is no playtime off switch when they’re together. Fortunately they don’t live together, so it’s just occasional visits that have to be managed.

Aww my friend has a gorgeous cavapoo, they are lovely little dogs. Good luck with your search OP.

I've sent you a PM OP

Cavaliers are fab wee dogs, full of character. I know there can be heart problems but I'm unsure how crossing them would help this, if it does at all.

Love cavs, had one for 18 years!!! Such a lovely boy. I wanted a cross for the non-shedding really but hoping for the gentle personality of the cav to come through.

Yes, exactly. We've had an absolute cracker of a dog from Pets 4 Homes. Visited the litter twice, saw puppy with the dam, and are still in touch with the breeder.

The problem is that scammers and fakers also advertise on there, so you need to check out phone numbers (for example, make sure that the mobile number on the ad hasn't been used for multiple litters) and be very alert. You must see the puppies with their mother, and if you are told that the mother has died, drill down into that story.

Thing is, you can get the exact opposite with a cross... poodle personality and cav coat, and you can’t tell when they’re puppies.

@polopolopolopoo - there is a 10 & 12 week old cavapoo at many tears rescue if interested…

Yea this a cross doesn’t guarantee the non shedding. My DPs family have a cockerpoo that just looks like a working cocker with a slightly “foxier” face. Sheds like a cocker too…

Any reason you wouldn’t just get a mini/toy poodle?

Would you consider a cockapoo OP? We recently got a brilliant puppy from a lovely breeder in Yorkshire. Friends have been to her before and she's very caring and genuine.
Similarly, if you were willing to consider a maltipoo, I could recommend an excellent breeder on the outskirts of London, who is a registered breeder with the local council. She also provided evidence that the pups had been checked by the vet, and that the parents were free from any of the worrying medical conditions.
I bought our maltipoo from her earlier this year (from Pets4homes) and was very satisfied that the mother and pups were well cared for and treated very well.
Our pup is an absolute delight! Friendly, bright and alert, and well adjusted. She is also very cute looking! Pm me if you want the breeder info.

My friend reserved her cavapoo before he was born and visited the puppy twice and saw it with its Mother in the breeders home. I think regardless of where you get the puppy that’s the really important bit. She paid 1200 for him.

Breeders being registered with the council is an absolute non event. It doesn’t guarantee anything. It’s like saying oh Dave has a driving licence, doesn’t mean Dave is a good or safe driver.

So much this. Registering with the Council merely allows a breeder to breed more than three litters a year. A puppy farm licence basically. This can mean that a very welfare conscious purebred show breeder may NOT need be registered because they may only breed once a year or even less than that.

Nah, it used to mean that and was a very helpful way of weeding out breeders. Now everyone who breeds even one litter is meant to have a licence. But all it means that have ticked the boxes about fire extinguishers and the storage of any drugs. There's nothing about health testing or low COI or vet checks. It's all pretty crap TBH.

No such thing as a KC registered crossbreed. I wish people would stop giving them these stupid names, it’s a mongrel. Nothing wrong with mongrels but call them what they are - giving them a “designer” name makes it easier for “breeders” to make money on them.
