Wet food for shihtzu

Elliewelly · 10/11/2022 22:17

I have a seven year old shihtzu who is at present on tails dog food, both wet and dry. She hates the dry food but tails won't let me have just wet food on subscription so am looking to change to something else. She was previously on lily's kitchen but the reviews I've read lately haven't been good. She dors have allergies, she is on piriton (vets suggestion) when we have hay fever season and has grain free food. I can't do raw as don't have freezer space and she turns her nose up at raw food anyway. Any suggestions are very welcome and food that comes in small trays would be better. She has 150g wet food a day.

My shih tzu has been a right fusspot but we finally seem to have found a food she likes. She gets a handful of small pebbly dry food (make sure it's for small dogs) with half a pouch of pedigree chums in gravy on top. She gets the same pm so basically one pouch a day plus the dry food.

She doesn't eat the dry food always but if still hungry in the evening she'll finish off her bowl as the gravy soaks in to the dry food and softens it.

Good luck

Pedigree isn’t grain free.

Butchers do 150g trays, they’re grain free and usually pretty well liked.

Re packet size though, I only give wet food in kongs or on lickimats, so if I buy something like forthglade or naturo I’m only using about 1/4 or a 1/3 of the tray at a time and I just stick it in the fridge, it keeps fine for a few days.

We feed our pugs with forthglade or naturo wet food alongside pooch and mutt or barking heads kibble.

I have a Shih Tzu who was fussy from being a pup but for over a year now he has been settled on Pooch & Mutt Health and Digestion. He gets dry in the morning then wet food at night with some kibble sprinkled over. The wet food comes in handy cartons you can reseal and pop in the fridge. All their food is grain free and highly rated on all about dog food website. They have different options aside from health and digestion food too (hair & skin, calming food etc)

My fussy Shih Tzu just likes Winalot pouches in jelly. He will not entertain pouches in gravy but loves scraps of cooked meat from our dinner with a bit of gravy! He is contrary.

Butternut dog food is very good.

Avoid Butchers my dogs became so ill from eating it both vomiting and diarrhoea. I narrowed it down to the food. I had originally used Tails but my Schitzu gained so much weight on it despite me requesting low calories. Both are now on Pooch and Mutt and absolutely love it

Try Nature Diet , they do it in smaller packs for smaller dogs , our dog has been on it for a while now ( doesn’t like dry ) and he has thrived on it . It’s also not very expensive considering how good the quality is .

Thanks for all your replies. She does have a small amount of the dry food and half the 150g tray twice a day . We have tried pedigree and winalot and unfortunately they both give her very loose stools. She doesn't like forthglade so have bought some butchers today and will try her on that. She's very stubborn, typical shihtzu so we'll see how she goes. Thanks again

Look at Caboodle. They send you a different flavour dry and wet food flavour for each day. Great quality and good for dogs where you need to change flavours up

How odd that so many people like Pooch & Mutt. I stumbled on this brand and DDog has seemingly recovered from her allergies and the vet is very happy with her condition.

I've never seen it advertised anywhere but think it's a good choice.

I second butternut, we switched from tails as our fussy bichon wouldn't eat the dry food (got three bags in the garage!)
She'll eat every bit of the butternut, and her poo is small, firm and doesn't smell.

Mine is fussy and also on grain free. We have recently switched from Forthglade and Lily’s Kitchen to Naturo. She has the grain free tins which are either in jelly or gravy but they also do wet trays in small and larger sizes.

Paddingtonthebear · 13/11/2022 07:44

They score highly on the All about dog food site and much cheaper than Lily’s Kitchen which has definitely gone downhill since sold to Nestle. They do smaller 150g size trays too
