How do I ‘untrain’ puppy habit (house training)

First puppy, 20 week old cockapoo. Absolutely adore her, as do the kids (teens).

I recently had to go away unexpectedly overnight (family illness). Couldn’t face putting the puppy in kennels so hired, at great expense, someone to stay in the house with her during the day, do walks etc, and the teens took over in the evening/for the overnight.

Came back on Day 2 afternoon to find that she had toileted on the upstairs floor (3 floor townhouse) not once but several times. Cleaned up using enzymatic cleaner but it’s happened twice since. I think she’s developed the habit.

how do I untrain her if this? Atm I can’t let her out of my sight in case it happens again. Have reverted to taking her out every hour, loads of praise and treats when she goes outside, etc etc, but it’s not easy with a full time (wfh) job. Is it possible to ‘undo’ this? Any advice at all?

Simply prevent her from doing what you dont want and reward what you do want.

In reality not always that simple.

Can you get a stair gate to stop her getting upstairs?

Treat her for going to the loo in the right place. Annoying but you will need to be vigilant for a while.

If she is going off to wee when people can not see her it is usually because she has been told off or found it stressful to wee in front of people. Again this can be resolved by rewarding wees in the garden.

Thank so :much. So keep on with the rewards etc.

yes I can get a stair gate although DDs bedroom is up there so it’s a hassle. But if it works, will be worth it. Will try.

She was previously mostly toilet trained, did whine to go out etc, and having to watch her every minute now while she’s inside is a real pain & not really feasible.
