Dh is away. Dog not eating

Dh away for a week. Dog hasn't eaten his dinner last night, breakfast or dinner tonight. Is it a thing for a dog to pine for its master?

Yes dogs can pine for their owners. They are obviously very attached to Dh.

Make sure they are drinking and see a vet if not. You could try something you know dog loves like chicken etc.

Keep an eye on him though as it maybe that he is unwell which just happened to coincide with your Dh going away.

When we would mind BILs dog she would go off her food for the first couple of days. If we added in something nice, like a bit of ham she'd scoff that and poke around her normal food. She had plenty of water, went to toilet ok etc, and by day 3 ish she'd go back on her grub. It was just her getting settled and feeling safe.

Also if it is warm where you are, sometimes they eat less anyway. One of ours is pretty picky at the moment, but is fine

mountainsunsets · 24/08/2022 08:53

Yes, very normal for them to pine for their owners.

However I wouldn't want the dog going too long without food so I would look to give him something he loves - maybe chicken and rice, some sardines on his food?

Sitdowncupoftea · 24/08/2022 12:47

He will eat eventually. Dogs do pine. My dog does if I go away overnight.

Quveas · 24/08/2022 12:49

If mine is being picky about eating, I find "stinky fish" works - kippers, mackerel etc. He just adores stinky fish and can't resist them. Maybe worth a try?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 24/08/2022 12:51

Is he drinking water? And pooping?

He will be fine for a day or so without food. Or call your vet if you need reassurance. Give him lots of cuddles and fuss in the meantime.

FizzyFucker · 24/08/2022 12:54

Mine does this every time DH goes away. He'll still take a biscuit off the postie though so I know he's fine really.
It usually takes a day or two and his labrador stomach will get the better of him and he'll start eating again. He's even made himself sick a couple of times, which is delightful.
Lots of fussing and cuddles seem to help if you are a softie like me.

TikTokCat · 25/08/2022 20:37

Thanks everyone. He is skipping breakfast completely and then eating his dinner at about 9pm so completely out if schedule. He will still eat a treat.
I tried putting chicken in the food and he ate the chicken but left the dried food. He is drinking water, and still going to the toilet as normal. Just a bit mopey.

Can’t you video call like you would for a child? I don’t know, I clearly don’t have a dog, but that my first thought. Could encourage him to eat.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 25/08/2022 20:47

my dog used not to eat if i was late home

MrsLargeEmbodied · 25/08/2022 20:47

sounds like your dog will eat when he is hungry

MrsLargeEmbodied · 25/08/2022 20:48

is he getting the same walks at the same time?

TikTokCat · 25/08/2022 21:32

Monday to Wednesday walks were the same. Today was different.

My dog occasionally refuses to eat anything. Hot weather, change of routine, partner away, neighbour banged bin lid as he was about to eat, it rained loudly, there's a y in the day, (you get the picture) then he just lays there and looks at it! I found if I picked some big juicy bits out and hand fed him, that would get the juices flowing and he would tuck in as normal!

I do the hand feeding and pretend to eat it myself whilst saying out loud "hmmmmm this is delicious" the dog is completely deaf so it's all a bit pointless.

QuebecBagnet · 25/08/2022 21:42

Definitely get your dh to talk to the dog over the phone if he can ring up. I do this when away and dh says the dog perks up.

TikTokCat · 25/08/2022 22:19

I tried hand feeding but he just looked at me like I was stupid :)

Haha sorry TikTokCat. They have such great expressions on their faces sometimes don't they!
Uerxx - Oh the things we do eh? 😁

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/08/2022 08:53

I cat sit for a couple and one does pine. He has extras like tuna to keep his weight up, a pheromone plug in and extra cuddles. He usually starts to come around by day 4.

TikTokCat · 26/08/2022 09:36

Err, so I am guessing a decomposing mouse near his food might have put him off a bit too...

Found yesterday. Had wondered what the smell was. Those cats are naughty....
