Hi, posting for advice, our lab who is food mad has been off his food for 3 days, he will eat chicken, cheese and ham but not the actual dog food, we changed his food yesterday as we thought he just did not like his food and overnight he has explosive diareah which could be because we changed his food ( although he did not eat much of that either) trying to work out if he is sick, fed up of the eat or just off dog food and now just wants fresh chicken for every meal!!!!

This happened to our dog last week, he wouldn't eat his kibble or wet food and ate mini sausages under duress, plus had terrible diarrhoea. He also wasn't drinking at all on a really hot day. We called the vet, one branch said to bring him in but they didn't have an appointment, the main branch (a hospital) asked us some questions and said it was probably just a tummy bug.

They told us to give him pro-kolin (a probiotic paste which you can get from pet shops), and oralade (an isotonic powder to keep him hydrated), and also to feed him plain foods like boiled chicken and plain rice. They also said to watch him and call again if he got worse. In the end he got better after a few days.

My advice would be to call your vet if possible though because ours did ask us a lot of questions and their advice might have been specific to our situation. Best of luck!

My ddog is off her food. Presumably the heat.... No other symptoms.. Just miserable!

Binglebong · 17/07/2022 20:40

My boy is off his food and had diarrhoea. With him it is just the heat and he is still himself (but bored!).
Keep an eye and if he is not himself go the vet, but try not to worry too much.

Mine is eating less and has had 3 poo accidents in as many days (and he NEVER has accidents).

I'm putting it down to the heat for now as he's absolutely fine in himself otherwise, including playing with other dogs on his 8pm walkies.

As others have said, common with heat, although you should always get a vet check after so many days. And of course he's eating chicken, cheese and ham. Given the choice of beans or chocolate, which would you pick?

Chicken and rice, prokolin (think that's what it's called) and a bit of the water you've cooked the rice in to drink. X

Thank you for the advice, we have a vet appointment for later today.

My spaniel has been the same since Friday - even asking to be let out during the night to go which he hasn't done since he was a tiny pup. I phoned the vet yesterday as it had been 3 days and they said it was likely the heat and prescribed him some Promax. He is happy enough otherwise so I'm keeping my fingers crossed he improves as the weather cools off!

Good to hear you have a vet appointment OP. In this heat, and with diarrhoea, they can dehydrate really quickly. Hope you dog is ok.

You can make sloppy chicken and rice - simmer it all in an excess of water and overcook the rice so it's got lots of chickeny water in it.
