Dog looking at me intently all the time, turns out I’ve got covid

Anyone else’s dogs behaviour changed when they had covid? The week before my positive covid test result I had the runs and he was a very watchful dog, looking at me constantly.

Yes. Dog is normally anti-social in the evening. When I had Covid he lay on top of me on the sofa the whole time.

My Mum came down over Christmas, we didn’t know she had Covid at the time. Dog normally prefers my Dad. He would not leave my Mum alone. Constantly by her side, trying to get on to her lap.

Dogs sense illness, often before we know.

I don't remember mine acting differently to be honest but she seemed to know I wasn't up to as long a walk as usual for a couple of days

IGotItInTheSales · 05/07/2022 20:50

Why only acct differently to covid tho?

Do they react to a headache? Flu?

Covidagainandagain · 05/07/2022 20:59

I can smell when my DH has/is getting a cold so it wouldn't suprise me if you dog knew you were getting it

PritiPatelsMaker · 05/07/2022 21:08

My DDog sniffed me all over, very intently and then wouldn't come near fir a couple of days. Usually she is very close.

Lazydaisydaydream · 05/07/2022 21:09

My dog did this when I was pregnant. Literally wouldn’t stop staring at me. Would block the tv sitting right in front just staring at me!

didn’t happen when I had covid though.

My friend always knew when she was going to have a fit as a few days before the cat would stop going out and would stay home close by her side. Took her a few years to notice but once she did it was very helpful.

My dog was doing this tonight! Just sitting looking at me, earlier tried to get on my lap. DP has covid currently , maybe I'm for it as well!

It's fairly commonly known that dogs can smell sickness. Some are better at it than others. If your dog doesn't normally react to you being ill (my dog usually does, but he's a breed known for this talent) it is possible that he has simply ignored "known conditions" that he has commonly experienced - like colds or flu - and is reacting to Covid because it is a less well known smell for him.

Jalisco · 05/07/2022 21:46

But do note that these dogs have been taught to detect Covid - doesn't mean others can't smell it, but it's unlikely that they "know" what they are snelling, just that there is something different.

I didn’t notice my dogs reacting when I had Covid.

One did used to bark at DD’s boyfriend when she was in school. We couldn’t stop her doing it. When she went to University I realised he was abusive. She got rid of him and met someone she’s happy with and the dog follows him around like a love sick puppy, and always wants attention from him.

She, the pooch, may not be interested in my health but she’s a damn good judge of character.

polkadotpixie · 05/07/2022 22:00

My dog never noticed when we had COVID, he is pretty dim though 🤣 He did constantly lay on me when I was pregnant though and I can definitely smell when DS is ill though so it wouldn't surprise me if they could smell it

theanxiousgardener · 05/07/2022 22:04

You smelled funny!
God, I love dogs! They're so intelligent.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 05/07/2022 22:15

My dog always knows when I’m poorly. He’s very clingy and attentive. He won’t leave me alone. It’s only just occurred to me. Perhaps he can be some sort of early warning system. If he starts hanging about I’ll gird my loins.

Same here! I'll often tell my husband he's getting ill the day before he shows any symptoms. He exudes a stale smell. It's the same with DD as well.
