I had a standard who died 3 years ago now and now have a miniature. Both rescues (quick plug for Poodle Rescue UK!). Both lovely dogs but the miniature is far more needy. I don't think standards are especially big (but it depends what you're comparing them with - we previously had a labrador and standard was smaller and of a far, far slimmer build. Having said that, the reason we went for a miniature this time was because I could not lift our standard by the time he got old (but that was me approaching 60 with arthritis and I had no problem when he and I were younger). Lots of poodle people in various Facebook groups - Toy and Miniature Poodle Club and Poodle Passion are my favourites - Poodle people are definitely not a dying breed. So many people are missing out on having a lovely dog!
