What happens in boarding kennels?

Parents have used these kennels for 30 + years and dog is always very happy but tired and i really like the father and daughter team that run the kennels but I just wonder how the dogs are and what they do?

We have to use kennels for holidays. D dog is not an easy dog as he is big strong and SUPER feisty!

Do they get cuddles and strokes and a fuss of? I sent treats, bed and toys and head collar for walking -what happens to these? FIL said he's not sure about the treats and think they give them to other dogs Grin.

Fourth time he's been here and we built up 1 then 3 then 7 nights over the year.

All kennels are different but they should all have a daily routine and should be able to tell you what your dog has been up to.

Why haven’t you asked the kennels?

cherrypiepie · 16/04/2022 12:10

@PigeonMail because I don't want to? That's why I asked on here instead.

It's idle curiosity.

Nobody can give you an answer as all kennels and dogs are different, though.

Some dogs find kennels tiring due to the extra exercise and play - unfortunately others don't settle well in a kennel environment and are tired due to lack of sleep and the fact that they haven't relaxed properly while you're away.

Our local kennel, for example, has a large enclosed field for supervised play (in small groups), and they do up to four walks a day to the beach, the fields nearby etc.

Others just have enclosed fields and won't do separate walks.

I owe a kennels, this is our day;
6am - 10/15 min walk, either with another dog (2 people walking) or on their own, depending on temperament - dogs are given a fuss and morning love.
9am - more cuddles and 2nd walks.
12pm - lunch play out and more cuddles than previously.
4pm - teatime walk and a love.
8pm - last walk, a goodnight cuddle.

All dogs are given their own treats as requested ie. Lunchtime, after last walks.
They also get our gravy bone treats.

We are very hands on as a kennels as we like to feel for lumps and bumps, rather than just putting them in a play area all together for a run around.

All kennels are different though and what suits one dog, won't suit another.
We are small, a lot of our customers use us for that reason.

My girl goes to a very small local kennels Her day there goes along these lines:
6am wee and hour long walk all dogs together.
Back for breakfast and cuddles.
10am free run in field, playing with other dogs, they are free to swim in the pool (my girl loves to swim)
12 noon rest and cuddles, my girl is super sociable so usually then goes into the kitchen with the owner.
3-5pm.free play. Run/swim etc
6pm hour long walk.
Dinner and then cuddles then out for a wee about 9pm.

She really enjoys her time there. She has a specialised diet so the kennels only give her the treats I allow but usually they give their own a bit more freely.
I get sent 3 photos a day to show she is ok, and they keep a little diary thing as well so I know what she is doing.

These kennels sound amazing! Lovely to hear what your dogs get up to at their kennels.

Our dogs go to a very standard kennels. I know someone who works there, as well as having had various chats to the owner. Most dogs are walked on lead, but the ones with good recall are allowed free running in the secure paddock. Dogs are fed whatever that owner specifies. They get their own treats, and fuss and cuddles. Toys sent in with them often come home freshly washed.

Ours are always happy to go in
