We don’t give Billy yak chews anymore either as they’re expensive and don’t last 5 minutes. His favourites are buffalo ears, pig skin rolls, beef skin braids (he likes these as he unplaits them, eats 2 pieces and carries the third around with him for weeks 😂).

GuyFawkesDay · 29/04/2022 19:37

Mine loves an empty hoof, bonus is they're about 80p, last weeks and stuffable too.

He's gone off breakfast a bit? Eats a smaller meal/snack but then leaves a fair bit, but really hungry in evening. Weird.

I just got a 1/2lb one from Amazon, he really enjoys rooting about in the long grass for it, or retrieving it. I think he'd do quite well picking up if I could get the sod to sit on a mark!

certainshepherdpups · 29/04/2022 20:32

I should have asked here before shelling out for the yak chews. 😅 I was looking for something long lasting and relatively odourless.

I also bought him some new toys, as I think he was getting bored. One is a stuffed toy in the shape of a garden with toy carrots to remove. You can put treats in as well. My pup loves it.

Aria20 · 29/04/2022 21:05

@certainshepherdpups lamb braids don't smell but sadly don't last too long.

Yamyam13 · 29/04/2022 21:14

We also love the Whimzees Rice Bones - last a good 10-20 mins and they are very low fat

GuyFawkesDay · 29/04/2022 21:53

Rice bones are a bit hit and miss here. The other Whimzees aren't, apart from the orange one. He likes those 🤣 the boarskin roll, olive wood and hooves are the consistent faves for chewing, the wood one has been the best value. Definitely need a new one as this one is 6 months old and just starting to look short!!

Aria20 · 29/04/2022 22:02

@GuyFawkesDay mine has a coffee wood chew from pets at home, she gnawed the end a bit but prefers to steal logs and kindling from the fire store!

Yamyam13 · 29/04/2022 22:33

I bought Yampup some pretty expensive wood which I think is a root of some sort... she couldn't give a toss about it. Wicker chairs & skirting boards on the other hand...

On the topic of chews (edible ones) how many does every give a day/week?
Yampup needs something to chew anytime she's not asleep at the moment, I try to stick to one a day.. but I'm starting to worry about the amount!

tizwozliz · 30/04/2022 06:43

Yak chews last Ada weeks, but she doesn't sit and chew for very long at a time. The olive wood stick wasn't a success, she prefers sticks she can shred. She'd definitely destroy a wicker chair though, she destroyed a couple of baskets last week.

The only other edible chew she'll reliably eat are ostrich tendons, but they only last 2 mins. Not found anything that keeps her occupied for any length of time, she either eats it in a couple minutes or is not interested. I've had a goats ear and an Earth Animal no hide chew kicking round the kitchen for months.

In terms of long lasting and no odour, Ostrich Bone has been our best value. Wood chews only interested our dog for a short time, but ostrich was a great hit. We've just moved onto our third, got our first around a year ago. They do crumble on the floor a bit and can leave some grease marks if eaten on carpet.

We give chew time several times a day. Typically she has something late morning, a Kong mid afternoon and something as we have dinner. Some days if she's in a really annoying mood she'll have more, sometimes she'll sleep all day. TerrorPup is underweight though so I don't really worry too much.

Hello! Can I join you? Have had pup nearly 2 weeks now and I'm finding it incredibly stressful.

mrsfeatherbottom · 30/04/2022 10:18

Here she is

Welcome @mrsfeatherbottom - what breed of dog is that? Looks absolutely gorgeous!

mrsfeatherbottom · 30/04/2022 14:41

She's a Wheaten Terrier (well, Irish Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier for the full breed name).

Yamyam13 · 30/04/2022 14:43

I always wanted a soft coated WT!

What are you struggling with?

certainshepherdpups · 30/04/2022 14:47

Aww, she's adorable @mrsfeatherbottom. This thread is very supportive and a good place to share ideas and also to commiserate when things don't go according to plan. Welcome!

And thanks to everyone who offered suggestions for chews.

Mainly the toilet training - she just doesn't seem to be getting it. Several times, I've been outside with her for ages and she'll actually come inside and pee on the floor. It's our fault because we tend to have the bi fold doors open a lot when it's nice weather so she must be confused. We're starting to use the lead when we take her outside now and just stand in the bit she usually uses to see if that helps.

Also, we've tried to take her out in the car a few times (short journeys) and she poos every time. We have her in a fabric crate thing my MIL lent us.

The one saving grace is that she sleeps brilliantly. Takes herself off to her crate about 10pm and sleeps through til someone goes in at 7 or so.

(Doesn't help that I just got my period and have the most appalling peri-meno PMT)

The second week was the hardest for me. I cried and cried. It does start to slowly get better from about 12 weeks though.

LadyCatStark · 30/04/2022 15:56

Billy found some new born chicks on our morning walk. I think they must have been moorhens and they were teeny tiny with no parents to be seen. I was terrified he’d eat them and they’d only be a mouthful but luckily he only sniffed them and watched them 😮‍💨. I tried to get a picture but they swam away so it’s not very good!

Mrsfeatherbottom - she’s just lovely. It will get easier, those first few weeks honestly were harder for me than having a newborn!

My pup seems to be loosing all his teeth this week, finding them everywhere! All he wants to do is chew so I’m not worrying about how many he’s having at the moment. I got some ostrich tendon braids which he loves but my goodness the farts are terrible, all doors and windows open here and multiple candles lit 😂

mrsfeatherbottom · 30/04/2022 17:23

Thanks everyone.

@LadyCatStark - I hope you mean when she turns 12 weeks and not the 12th week of owning her!!

tizwozliz · 30/04/2022 17:53

We're on our way home, just the 8 hour ferry journey and a 3 hour car journey to go. Going to wear her out at the beach first.

We had our first hotel stay last night, which went fine once she got over the initial excitement of the room and she handled the elevator like a pro. Woodland walk this morning, then most of the afternoon in the car, with a few stops. One to admire the tulips

Oh yeah I did haha sorry to panic you!

@tizwozliz that’s one for a canvas 🥰.

GuyFawkesDay · 30/04/2022 21:20

Amazing pic @tizwozliz

I love wheaten terriers, gorgeous puppy!!! I remember weeping with puppy blues too. It sucks!

FawkesPup is fast asleep now. We had a dog meet up this morning, then an accidental one this evening for our longer field walk with a friend who also has a spaniel, they had a lovely time though there was nearly fisticuffs over the dummy. Luckily I had a ball so both dogs had something to carry.

Going to bite the bullet and pay £140 for the gundog course. We met a lovely pup today who'd been on it and they were so impressed and the dog was fantastic so hopefully it'll help Mr FawkesPup and his manners!
