Does your dog eat grass?

First time dog owner to a rescue dog had him since last summer and have noticed since we've had him that he often eats grass and then gets sick.
Do all dogs do this? I've always had cats and often saw them do this so I'm presuming it's normal but thought I'd see if other dogs do this and are otherwise well?

Sticky willies Grin

Yes my ddog likes grass, it never makes her sick. She'll generally just have a couple of mouthfuls every so often from the verges on a walk

I used to call it Velcro weed. It really does seem like it would be a horrible texture to eat, I thought my dog was weird for liking it! One of its many other names is goosegrass, the wiki page says they eat it too.

@BalladOfBarryAndFreda You learn something new everyday!

My dog doesn't eat grass, just the plants. Costs me a fortune replacing them.

Expensive tastes!

Mine too - on walks she seems to love to munch on a particular type of long grass that's sometimes at the edge of fields.

But if she's eating the grass in our back garden I know she's probably about to make herself sick - it's usually when she's woken up earlier than usual, and there's therefore a bigger gap between waking up and breakfast time, I assume she must have a hungry sicky sort of feeling so if I spot her doing it I usually try and get some food down her quickly as if she's actually sick she then won't eat for a while!

Thanks everyone for your replies, seems like it's pretty normal then from all your replies.
He's probably done it a handful of times since we've had him and usually sick in the house! thankfully today he was sick in the garden after eating the grass!
He's not unwell he's eating and had a long walk but maybe I'll mention it to the vet when he's due his vaccination in the summer, thanks for the reassurance everyone!

Not sick if she only has a few pieces of grass, can be very selective about which grass

XelaM · 03/03/2022 21:47

Our poodle used to make himself sick by eating grass. I think they say it's good for them, as it clears their stomach.

But our current dog (a pug) just loves to eat grass. Full stop Grin

TheSandgroper · 04/03/2022 05:13

To keep our walks moving, I pick the grass (the right grass) and she gets it in her breakfast bowl after. I try to do it most days. SandyDog is also partial to a frozen pea, cabbage cores cut small and raw French beans.

We also have a dianella in a pot that now has a cage around it so the leaves can be nibbled on as they grow.

Greyhound here, he has favourite spots on regular walks and I have to wait while he has a good chomp on the grass, sticky weed even better. It's like a buffet outside.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 04/03/2022 08:09

Mine eats grass and sometimes barfs
Mine eats goose grass as well.
I read somewhere it's the spring grass shoots, they taste sweet.
She also loves tomato and to our shock olives .

ErrolTheDragon · 04/03/2022 08:39

I wonder if anyone's dog doesn't eat grass?

foxy3 · 06/03/2022 00:05

@BalladOfBarryAndFreda sticky willies has cracked me
Up 🤣 I will
Never call them
Weeds again

Susiesapio · 07/03/2022 18:18

My dog eats grass when she has an upset tummy. The vet says they do it when they have a tummy ache.

Papergirl1968 · 07/03/2022 18:42

Ddog eats grass or weeds on most walks but isn't sick. She did have the remnants in her poo the other day though. It was dangling out of her arse so I had to gently pull...Envy (not envy!)

pigsDOfly · 07/03/2022 20:19

My dog likes to eat the grass in spring and summer. She's very selective when deciding which grass to eat, takes her time over it and only eats the tips. This never makes her sick and she clearly enjoys the taste.

Mine cats were same.

However, if she (dog) is feeling unwell she'll dash out to the garden, crop at the grass in a slightly frantic manner and will end up being sick.
