Dog crate for travelling with large dog?

Does anyone use one for the car? We have a large car and for now our dog is fine on the back seats harnessed in when I have to take them to an from vets/groomers. Come summertime we would like to do some more trips as a family for walking/weekends away and are looking to purchase a crate to have in the boot so Ddog can be comfy and separated from any overnight bags/equipment.

The boot is definitely large enough but we have only had small dogs in the past that were fine in the backseat in carriers and we've never had to think about crates so I would really appreciate any recommendations for good ones to look at and also any tips for making a dog comfy in the car!

I have a grille and a tailgate guard which work well for us (and the grille kept the dogs contained when we were rear-ended).

If you're looking at crates specifically, TransK9 are well recommended and a lot of people if know use them.

The wonderfully named Hamster Baskets make painted mesh crates which are surprisingly sturdy and can be fit your boot precisely.

I should have said, metal mesh.

We bought a crate bit ours is very unhappy in it. He cries and whines which he doesn't do if he's just in the boot with the grill and guard. He likes to move position a bit I think and being trapped makes him unhappy. It was an expensive mistake
