What breed(s) is my Italian rescue dog?

We adopted our lovely dog from Sardinia a few years ago, pics attached. The mum is a Segugio Italiano (not sure if pure-bred), dad unknown. The DNA tests I have looked at include data for several hundred breeds but not Segugio Italiano, so not sure it would even be worth doing one.

Our girl is a bit smaller and lighter than typical Segugio Italianos, has shorter ears and probably less muscle mass overall. She seems to use her eyes rather than her nose to track prey (or more often other dogs to play with, her prey drive isn’t particularly strong) and is excellent at spotting far-away objects. Needs lots of exercise, is good with children and cats, very friendly and total cuddle monster and sofa dog once she’s had her morning run.

Any ideas what other breeds might be in the mix here? TIA!

Before reading the post fully. I would have guessed lab X sighthound (whippet or smaller lurcher).

LaurieFairyCake · 30/01/2022 13:46

I'd go with lab and something pointy

FicusLyrata · 30/01/2022 13:55

Mmh, interesting, two people saying lab, maybe I will get a DNA test after all! I though she was too slim / petite for that, but would make sense if there's something like whippet in the mix as well.

Sighthound x Lab

Sheepareawesome · 30/01/2022 14:06

I would also think some sort of sighthound too, from both the looks and the description. Maybe a lab? Is she fast when she runs? I know someone with a Vizla / Lab cross and although she is slightly larger she looks similar. Might be some of that in her too?

Whatever it is, she is gorgeous!

Scattyhattie · 30/01/2022 14:42

Pointer/sighthound does look bit lab too, probably find it's a right mixture.

FicusLyrata · 30/01/2022 14:48

Thank you, Sheepareawesome!

She is pretty fast (pic of her at full pelt attached). Can't quite keep up with our neighbour's greyhound but is never far behind.

She is beautiful.
The running style suggests greyhound / whippet to me, so I would tend towards Lurcher - maybe pointer/greyhound ?

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 30/01/2022 14:55

Wow she is beautiful
@FicusLyrata

By her stance in the above pic I'd definitely say cross with a sight hound they hold their torso and legs a certain way when in flight.

I have four of them and they look exactly like yours in the pic above.

I've never seen other breeds hold their bodies like it

Teawithmilknosugar · 30/01/2022 15:24

I would presume she's a bit of a Heinz 57, I wouldn't necessarily say she has any lab I think the Lab look comes from the Segugio Italiano. She possibly has some cirneco dell'Etna which is a hound slightly smaller than the Segugio. Another option would be a very little bit of Sardinian shepherd which might account for her ability to spot things at a distance although I'd there was more than a little bit I think she'd be bigger and woolyer
