Puppy golden retriever - sling?!

We pick him up next weekend! I know I need to continue socialising him whilst he waits for his jabs. Do people have any dog carrier/ sling type things that they would recommend for a golden? I’ve looked and they all seem to be slings that I can’t see either holding a golden’s
weight and size or stopping him from leaping out of! Or is socialising via a carrier a new thing - I can only remember having our border terrier tucked inside a coat (but that was 16 odd years ago!) Thanks

My pup was similar size to a golden puppy and I just put a rucksack on my front, a towel in the bottom and had him in it unzipped. Obviously had to make sure he couldn't/wouldn't jump out! Was lovely. He still knows that rucksack is "special" when he sees it!

I think he’d be getting too big too quickly for a sling. My lab boy, albeit a bit smaller, just got held -for example we drove to the local co-op and DH stood outside with dog in arms, talking to all the women who oohed and aaahed at the puppy.
DH misses those days.

I put mine in a rucksack and kept an arm
round it so he couldn’t jump out! Would have grown out of a sling in a week.

I use a puppy carrier to socialise my foster lurcher puppies who can be quite old before they are fully vaccinated. Its an awful lot easier than carrying them in your arms, but before someone donated them to me, I used a scarf inside my coat to add some support, or just wore a rucksac on my front with their head poking out. You have to hold round them all the time, though one I have has a bit to clip on to their collar to stop any impromptu leaps.
I don't know what brand they are, but I'd recommend a padded waist strap, and a strap that goes between your shoulder blades - I have to use a puppy collar on one of ours instead, but it makes a lot of difference in the comfort with a heavier puppy

We bought the AGPTEK sibling from Amazon. It was great for getting our retriever out from 8 weeks, it did only last us about 4 weeks though as he was too big after that! Up until that point he fit in it perfectly and didn’t try to jump out, he would sleep in it too. It would get quite sore on my back after a period of time, even from 8 weeks they get quite heavy to hold after a while!!

We have had a sort of large tote bag thing specifically designed for dogs. With a sort of comfy, waterproof lining. One puppy loved the bag, jumped in to it happily and often went to nap in it. The other had 0 interest in being in the bag and had a sort of long suffering expression the whole time.

Great for getting them out and about when they are too small though. We took ours on buses and trains, to see all kinds of animals and busy places.

Perfect - thank you everyone. I’ll do a bit of research but I’m liking the rucksack idea!

We just carried, and did a lot of sitting and watching. They really don't need to spend that long out when they're small. Little and often.

Justfivemoreminutesplease · 23/01/2022 20:31

@Scotty80 this one here please? I think the golden looks photoshopped on the first photo and then they have the golden (albeit older) walking alongside, probably as they know that was the more likely scenario Grin
I just mainly need it for standing outside the school gate, trying to ensure that the puppy doesn’t do a runner!!

I bought that carrier for my golden pup. Its not worth it! Only really did one walk with it. He wasn't comfortable in it so I was mostly holding the carrier in my arms, I might as well of just held him. They are heavy pups! I think the next one will be going in a forward facing rucksack.

CMOTDibbler · 23/01/2022 20:57

This is more like what I have

Scotty80 · 29/01/2022 11:22

@Justfivemoreminutesplease yes that’s the one! As I said it doesn’t last very long as they grow so quick but was great for the first few weeks.
