Is anyones dog on antacids long term?

BiteyDog seems to suffer a lot at night.

He sleeps on our bed so we know when he isn't feeling well and he is waking and lip smacking now around 5 times a night. He gets up or sits at the end of the bed looking like he might vomit (and has bought up bile on some occasions).

When I spoke to my vet last year they recommended giving a bit of food late at night which we do but it only helps at the time and we can't continuously feed him throughout the night. At the time they said they wouldn't necessarily want to prescribe antacids as they can cause long term problems but we are all so sleep deprived I am wondering if now is the time to go back and say we need something to help him.

Does anyone dogs take them long term?

My dog had this problem on and off for a couple of years. It was odd as it came out of nowhere and then he's been fine since. He was on ranitidine for a bit. I'm afraid I can't remember how long for. But probably a month or two. What really seemed to help was switching him to chappie. He had this for about a year and then we switched to a dry food and the acid problems never returned. However he did have horrendous wind so now he has a wet dog food tray and a handful or two of mixer and is overall doing well. He's a GSD X so sensitive tummy comes with the breed.

Ours had IBD but no episodes for several years so he does have a history of stomach issues and we feed wet as he digests that well.

The lack of sleep is crippling so I guess it's back to the vets and push for some medication but at the time they really weren't keen but it's obvious he feels nauseous.
