Can my dog sense that I’m on my period?

Because she’s acting like a total nutter and I can’t figure out why! She’s 7 months old so it won’t be entirely new to her! But this evening she was trying to give my crotch a really good sniff, then got completely wired and started pouncing on random things (that mad hunting thing they do with toys) and then kept coming to me but getting really spooked and hiding under the sofa crying. Went on for hours. Barking at her tail. Properly discombobulated. Usually she’s asleep on the sofa from 7pm and I’ve only just got her calmed down.

She will be able to smell it yes.

3AndADog · 30/12/2021 23:40

Would it send her loopy?

My first dog always noticed and would like to have a good sniff. Current dog never seems to notice, although its hard to imagine he can't smell it. Dogs have a phenomenal sense of smell.

MissSmiley · 30/12/2021 23:54

My dog slept under my side of the bed when I was pregnant even before I knew! Never did it any other time

Hellocatshome · 30/12/2021 23:55

Would it send her loopy? being a 7 month old dog is enough to send a dog loopy.

Starcaller · 30/12/2021 23:59

Has she had her first season yet?

Branleuse · 31/12/2021 00:02

Ive noticed in the past that male dogs try and hump me and get excited when ive been on my period. Its one of the reasons I only ever get female dogs.
Clearly I smell like a bitch

3AndADog · 31/12/2021 00:26

Haha yes being 7 months is pretty loopy.

She hasn’t had her season yet and I was wondering about that too 🤔

My dog follows me about looking miserable when I have my period. I assume he smells it and thinks I am injured.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 31/12/2021 00:35

We had a 6 foot iguana. He knew. And bit me!! The fucker!!

StillMedusa · 31/12/2021 00:35

I don't have periods any more (hysterectomy hooray!) but mine certainly knew when my DD2 had hers..and we think our dog knew DD2 was pregnant before she did .. usually she never leaves my side and suddenly she was glued to DD2 at all times and was much more vocal and clingy than normal! It was a relief to discover DD2 was expecting Grin (DD2 and her dh were living with us at the time)
Dogs sense of smell is incredible!

DramaAlpaca · 31/12/2021 02:05

I think she will sense it, yes. But a seven month old pup is going to be daft as a brush anyway.

OP, much kudos for using my favourite word, 'discombobulated'. Wonderful to see it on here!

Justcannotbearsed · 31/12/2021 09:17

Probably but also likely to be first season.

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 31/12/2021 09:21

A dog's life is defined by interesting smells. Your period is the equivalent of the dog finding a box-set of a great new TV series.

How would I know - I mean apart from the bleeding - are there any physical signs to look for? I think I read enlarged vulva. Anything else? If it’s her heat will she be bonkers for the entire few weeks?

Mine is 10 months and he can - also when I had BV he wouldn't stop shoving his nose in my crotch!
