Uneasy around friends dog

My friend has a big dog, a mastiff type thing.

I love dogs and have one of my own but this one makes me nervous. He has growled at me a few times and I dont want to be dramatic but I dont think this is ok is it??

They say he is very protective of them and their kids and also loyal.

Does anyone have any experience with these types of dogs? Am I being silly wondering if it might snap at me?

OP at least the growl gives you a heads-up so you can move a long way away.
But I would absolutely keep my distance if I were you. Different room, other side of the room, never be alone with the dog.

A Chihuahua is somewhat limited as to what damage it could do, but a big strong dog?
Growling is meant to say, "I'm not happy, back off", that's what it's for, so you're sensible to take notice.
Not sure saying anything to the owners would be useful (because, well people), just, treat this dog like an uninsulated live wire and don't be in any situation where you can't steer well clear at all times.

I think you should trust your gut on this, your not nervous for no reason. He'd almost certainly pick up on it too which in itself is dangerous. Give him plenty of space.

I'd stay well away, and I'm very confident with dogs.
