Is it normal for dogs fur to change colour/shade?

I’ve namechanged because I post photos of her on Facebook and don’t want this linked to my other posts.

Rescue dog, short haired lurcher, aged possibly 12-18 months, she had her first season in august if that helps anyone age her? (Now spayed)

In the last 2 weeks or so I’ve noticed the hair down her neck and shoulders has turned much darker and then in the last few days the two bits between neck and shoulders on each side appears to be much lighter. Is this normal?

Hopefully photo attached (Santa is bringing a new collar Grin)

I have a red collie who is nearly ginger in the summer and then goes a dark deep chestnut in the winter.

The tail at the moment still has a lighter ginger tinge but will soon catch up with the rest of the fur Smile

My dogs dark brown almost black but certain times of the year he has a ginger tinge all over him.
His mum was a jet black patterdale and his dads a biscuit coloured shar pei

Oh so it’s a seasonal thing? Like how human hair lightens in the sun?

My Eurasier was golden with a black muzzle and a couple of black spots on her knees as a puppy.
Now at nearly three she is black and brown across her back and neck, and the only golden bits are her butt and tail! She goes lighter in summer and has a ginger tinge to the brown.

My friend's cockerpoo has gone form a dark mottled shade to a light gold all over! I guess like humans their coats can change with the seasons Grin

We had cairns, they started off red and ended up black. I think it's fairly normal.

WaltzingBetty · 11/12/2021 18:51

The lighter parts look like her undercoat is thickening and gathering - does she need brushing?

ShadyDog · 11/12/2021 18:52

Thanks all. My last dog started off almost white and stayed almost white.

Could be this! Her fur has been shedding a bit.

Our dog is black but when her winter coat comes in she looks red in the sunlight.

WaltzingBetty · 11/12/2021 18:57

Yeah my dog looks like that when she needs brushing @ShadyDog
The undercoat seems to clump and gather around her neck and hips.
She's moulting start the moment too

CMOTDibbler · 11/12/2021 19:23

Yes. My salukish lurcher started off white with a few lemon/fawn spots and over time he has got more and more fawn and his pink skin has got more and more black spots. My other dog is a sort of seal brown in the winter and is blue grey in the summer

Cait73 · 13/12/2021 22:05

Mine changed a LOT, she was golden brown she's now cream

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 13/12/2021 22:20

1 of my Lurchers goes quite orange in the summer. She loves sunbathing!

Oh what beauties! Your lurcher is quite like mine except mine has white socks and blouse.

Our black labs hair dulls to a dark grey when he is coming up to and in moult. Once done and he has had a good brush out he is back to shiney darker black.
