It’s horrendous, and I think lots of people are wilfully ignorant of puppy farming and smuggling because it doesn’t suit them to think about it. They just want their designer dog.

Anotherhill · 06/11/2021 16:42

I agree, nobody ever listens if you try and warn people about it

We’ve been campaigning against this for years. I’m only surprised that it seems so unknown to so many people still. The worst thing they ever did was getting rid of the six months quarantine for all dogs arriving in this country, a high price to pay for pet passports so people can take their pet abroad on holiday.
The craziness of the lockdown puppy madness has just made it so much worse, one of the main reasons genuine breeder/ exhibitors have refused to start litters during it. Or if they do, to maintain their breeding line, will only sell to others in the same breed or people who have had previously had a puppy from them & refuse to charge the inflated, ludicrous prices. If you sell a puppy at your normal price to anyone else you know there is a huge risk it will be sold on at a higher price & you’ll have no knowledge of where it ends up.
Some of these puppy farmers are very devious. Paying people to pretend they own the bitch & puppies so buyers can come to see them “ in their own home” so that’s no guarantee.
The safest way, as we’re always saying is to go through the breed club secretaries to find long time members & exhibitors & go on their waiting lists.

I cannot stand people that willingly buy their dog from gumtree, or just ignore the signs because they’re too selfish or stupid to do a bit of research and see what these poor animals have to suffer in order for someone to get a cute (usually poodle cross) puppy.

Quite a lot of info on the Dogs Trust website too.

A great article - thanks for sharing it!
Sadly when people want something they often don’t care about the background of the dogs - the best way to discourage people is to warn them of the high vet bills!

The other thing (on the reverse and done with good intentions) is that people buy the puppy to ‘save’ it - I nearly did this once in my naivety, as I was devastated about this poor puppy. In the end I reported it but was still so sad. I cried the whole journey back.

Very good post and advice @Darklane

Anotherhill · 07/11/2021 09:49

It has been talked about in the vet world for quite some time - I hadn’t realised that it was being looked into at a higher level ( although very pleased that it is).

i agree with a warning about high vet bills, that might be a deterrent.
