Dog won’t wee or poo in the rain.

Driving me crackers. She won’t go out in the rain and instead sneaks off for a cheeky poo somewhere else. Tonight she chose the clean laundry pile. Angry
WTF do I do? She is 6 months old and very very clever.

We have a dachshund and they are particularly prone to this!

We had to stand guard at the door and watch her go. If she tried to come back, we kept blocking her and making her go back out (obviously if she was due to use the loo).

You also have to watch them like a hawk if they haven’t gone outside because they will slink off to go somewhere comfy. If you can catch them and get them outside they’ll eventually understand they won’t get away with it.

It takes a lot of perseverance if you have a stubborn breed. I’ve seen Facebook posts from people who’ve set up covered areas in the garden for their dog to encourage them to go outside.

Ours is 11 now and still tries her luck on very wet days Hmm.

Basically, I force it! Mine is one and would prefer not to go out in the rain. I lure him out with treats and then close the door and tell him to go. He usually wees then tries to go inside but I call him back onto lawn and wait till he poos! If I don't insist he will wee outside quickly then go to bed and wake up for a sneaky dump in the wee small hours....🙄🙄 when he was smaller and didn't want to I used to take him out on a lead.

Djifunrsn · 05/10/2021 23:08

On a lead, you hold the umbrella?

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 05/10/2021 23:10

I was stood in the pouring rain last night until mine went. He has learned that I don't let him in until he does so it's all a bit quicker

nc4565 · 05/10/2021 23:22

Same here. We have to force the issue. Outside in the rain under an umbrella and not going indoors until I see a wee!

MrsEricBana · 05/10/2021 23:29

Yep, on a lead till they go.

noblegreenk · 06/10/2021 00:11

I have this with my greyhound but I'm just really firm about it. Last night it was chucking it down and she didn't want to go outside for bedtime toilet. I just gave her a good nudge to get outside and then I shut the door and watch her. I won't let her back in until she's been. It was horrible when I first started doing it because she kept coming back to the door with pleading sad eyes! I had to keep telling her to do her business until she did. I've had her 4 years and now she knows that she's better off being as quick as she can about it, so she'll get let back inside quicker

TaraR2020 · 06/10/2021 00:15

Pop a coat on them?

icedcoffees · 06/10/2021 06:48

Coat for the dog and an umbrella for both of you. You could try and erect some kind of shelter in the garden for them to go under.

Mine hates going out in the rain but he doesn't have a choice in the matter Grin

GoodnightGrandma · 06/10/2021 06:50

Put her dog coat on and go out with her. Stand on the grass with her. And stay out until she’s done. She’ll soon learn that the quicker she goes, the quicker she gets back in.

Bebeschitt · 06/10/2021 07:27

Dog coat. My dog has an amazing bladder so no toileting in the house but there comes a point where she has to go!
DP rolled his eyes when I said I was getting her a coat. Huge bull breed in a coat? It gets her out the door though. Does nothing for his street cred apparently. Do blokes in their late 40's even have street cred?

Katshouldnotswim · 06/10/2021 07:35

Wow this has opened my eyes to something new. I didn’t know this was a thing !

As a spaniel owner problems with water are the extreme opposite easily finding every single muddy puddle to roll in at every opportunity

WoodchipNightmares · 06/10/2021 08:20

I'm reminded of these - leads with an integrated umbrella. It really would ruin the last of your DH's street cred though @bebeschitt Grin

Bebeschitt · 06/10/2021 16:41

@WoodchipNightmares I think she needs one to keep her head dry Grin

MeredithMae · 10/10/2021 12:32

This cracks me up, I stand there getting soaked while holding a giant golf umbrella over the babies (not me!)

hookiewookie29 · 10/10/2021 20:21

Is she a Staffy lol!?
Ours gets dragged out and brought straight back once he's 'been' and given a treat😁

LoveFall · 11/10/2021 03:19

Same problem here. Amazing how well a 12 lb maltipoo can put the brakes on. Very frustrating. It was teeming down last night. He managed a quick pee then pulled back in. He left a discrete gift sometime in the night. Aargh.

SmurfetteBlue · 11/10/2021 03:27

I'm not sure how true this is but I heard that the noise of the rain hitting the ground can be really loud because of how sensitive dogs hearing is. We have a dog that doesn't like to go out in the rain to toilet too and he will hold it in until he has no choice but to give in. So he does go out eventually x
