Will my dog become more cuddly?

This is a ridiculous question to ask but my puppy just likes to sleep on the floor. We were hoping he would snuggle up to us in the evenings but he jumps off!
He likes strokes and loves tummy rubs! He used to snuggle up but think he does get quite hot as likes to sleep on hard floor or cool mat?
18 week old shih tzu. Thought would be a lap dog!

Also loves to sleep on the fireplace. Which is stone so very cold.

Yes I would say as the temperature drops you might get more cuddles :)

Mamainthemaking · 29/09/2021 20:25

Our dog is less cuddley in the summer months and he’s a Rottie X. You may well find he’ll be happier to snuggle when he gets a bit chilly. 🙂

Thanks I was hoping that might be the case! Mind you, it's freezing tonight!

Our poodle would jump off if you tried to cuddle him, but our pug likes to snuggle up so close he sometimes literally ends up on our head/neck. It's very cute, but not particularly comfortable!

Some dogs just aren't very cuddly.

My own beagle has to be touching someone constantly Hmm which is lovely in winter but not so great when it's thirty degrees outside!

bingohandjob · 30/09/2021 14:08

Our lab was very, very cuddly for first few months then seemed to actively dislike sitting on our near us from months 5 to 8 and I was really sad but now he is back to lolling at our feet, on our laps or just coming up and nuzzling and leaning into us. He seems to still think he's an 8kg pup that fits in our lap rather than the 30kg hound he is with his arse and balls shoved right up into our face with his whipping tail about to knock my specs off as he 'settles down' (I love it).

Our dog isn’t very cuddly in the summer but once the sofa blankets and oodies make an appearance he’s there like a shot .

Jaffapaffa · 30/09/2021 17:42

Our Shih-Tzu seems to either want to be on his own, usually in another room, or insists on sitting almost on top of someone.
We just let him do what he feels like.
He's definitely more affectionate in the evening, and in winter.

My dog is definitely a lapdog but sometimes he wants a cooler place. I do find he is more cuddly when the weather is colder. He usually sleeps in a cuddler bed beside me on the floor, but he has jumped up onto the bed a few times on cooler nights recently. I wake up to him pressed into me along my back.

I think one key to encouraging a cuddly dog is making sure they know they can move away if they want.

Quickchangeartiste · 30/09/2021 19:47

Both my dogs get cuddlier as they get older (labs) but it’s on their terms - as in they snuggle up or move away as they see fit and if I should not tickle, stroke or fidget with them while they are sleeping - at that point they will sigh heavily and I realise I have overstepped.🙄

FizzyTango · 02/10/2021 11:07

My dog wasn’t that cuddly as a puppy. Full of energy and bouncing around! Now he’s a ginormous lump of a lap dog (GSD) and demands cuddles and shared naps!

BridgeFarmKefir · 02/10/2021 12:07

We got our puppy in July at 8 weeks old and he loved to sleep in the corner of the room on the wooden floor. The first few times he did it I panicked as I couldn't see him. Now he's a bit older (4 months) and it's getting cooler, he's much happier to sleep on me. Photo for evidence 😉

As a PP has said, not all dogs like being cuddled.

How's his health? Shih tzus are prone to skin problems, which can make them hot and uncomfortable, and less likely to want to be touched.

NotQuiteUsual · 02/10/2021 16:39

My Newfie cross really does not like cuddles
Never slept on us, never snuggles up. Now its a bit cooler she will sleep at my feet. Or come sit next to me. She's just not a cuddler, she shows her love other ways.

Tanfastic · 02/10/2021 19:09

I had a Lhasa Apso and he wasn't really cuddly. I used to have to force a hug now and again and he'd begrudgingly give me one 😂. He did like to sit beside me on the sofa though but not snuggled up.

familychallenge · 02/10/2021 19:50

Mine slept on me when he was very tiny but haas never liked being stroked or cuddled to sleep. Now he can't lie close enough and leans in a lot, but still not mad keen on being stroked. There's one chair I sit on that he jumps up on if he wants a fuss but it's always on his terms- I agree with a pp who said they need to be able to choose.

cheeseisthebest · 02/10/2021 20:11

Oh absolutely, you can't force them to cuddle you!

Sorry if that sounded negative! I just meant I kept reading all this stuff about stroke/ cuddle pup to sleep and mine hated it, even if he was cosied up leaving him alone was the best thing. He spent several months alternating between sleeping right in front of the fire and then in the coldest place in the house 🤣🤣 now he's a snuggler but still not big on much fuss and stroking
