Three weeks until new pup day - what have I forgotten?

We're picking up our long awaited black lab pup in 3 weeks. Think we're just about as ready as we'll ever be. We have crate, lead, dog bed, a couple of toys, a kong, food and water bowls. Appointment made with vets the week we pick her up, insurance quote saved (will buy nearer the time). Is there anything else I'm missing?

Stair gate - either for stairs or to divide spaces

Lots of stair gates/baby gates for chewy labs. I'd also recommend:

a) dog tags
b) adaptil plug in
c) harness to start getting pup used to wearing one
d) a play pen of types to keep pup contained when not in the crate

Congratulations on your new pup. Smile

Off the top of my head, in no particular order:

  • Plenty of good quality kitchen roll. (Alongside the enzymatic cleaner Polly mentioned.)

  • You say you have a couple of toys, but you can never have enough things to chew. Have enough to rotate them so she doesn’t get bored.

  • I would also recommend a good long fleece plait for encouraging distanced (rather than toothy Grin) play. You can even make one out of old dressing gown belts or similar.

  • Collar and tag.

  • Basic grooming kit.

  • Easy to slip on shoes, head-torch/beanie with built in light for middle of the night toilet trips.

  • Training treat pouch to have on you at all times is invaluable.

  • I always keep kitchen roll/foil etc inner tubes and cardboard boxes as ‘legal’ things that can be gleefully destroyed. Also useful for enrichment, hide the treat type games.

Ah lots there is stuff I've forgotten I had sorted. We have cleaner, kitchen roll, tag (breeder is providing first collar), stairgates, treat pouch, poo bags. Slip on shoes and head torch are things we have already.

We weren't considering a playpen, the kitchen is puppy proofed as much as possible (i.e. puppy can't come to harm whether kitchen can is a different question!).

I have 8 weeks off work so pup will be well supervised.

Tons of natural chews.

If you're going to need a dog walker or daycare I would get looking now.
