German Shepherd behaviour when there's a knock at the door

My 16 month old GSD is starting to find his voice now and will bark when there's a knock at the door. In addition to barking, he will often weave his way in between my legs if I'm standing, and he'll just stand there in that position until I move. If I'm sitting down when someone knocks the door, he won't come up to me; he'll just bark and then stare at the door.

Would anyone have any idea if his behaviour is because he is wanting me to protect him, or whether he is seeking to protect me?

It's his natural guarding instinct.
