Am I being paranoid or should I go to the vet?

There's something up with my dog. 8 years old, Tibetan Terrier.

About a week ago he had bad diarrhoea in the night. I presumed something he ate and he was back to normal within a day. He's still eating and pooing ok, he's just acting a bit strangely.

His day is usually: breakfast, long walk in the morning, mooching and sleeping through the day, supper, shorter walk in the evening, bed.

The last few days he's ok to go for a walk but not running around like he usually does - sometimes just stopping and not going any further. I've had to put him on the lead to keep him going. A couple of times in the evening, I've only got to the end of the road and he's turning round wanting to come home. At home, he can't seem to settle. He's either standing in the middle of the room, tail down, looking like he doesn't know where he is. Or, quite often, he's behind the sofa (this is usually only when there's fireworks). In the garden, he's doing a lot of digging, then lying in the hole, or squeezing himself behind a bush. The digging's not out of the ordinary, but it's usually to bury or find a chew, not to lie down.

I read that dogs can take themselves off to hide if they're not well. But he has no other symptoms - as I say, eating and drinking, pooing, tail is still up most of the time.

Any ideas? Should I be looking for something else? Or pop to the vet on Monday?

I would pop to the vet but then I have been known to take one of mine to the vet because I thought "he looked pale" (black and white border collie!). Blood tests did show he had a mega urine infection though. My vet will remind me of this frequently Smile.

I think if he is behaving in a different way and looks uncomfortable it is a good idea to get him checked over. Standing still could be pain and also the digging trying to get comfy.

He's not happy, is he?
Vet on Monday.

squeaver · 15/05/2021 14:24

Lol at "looking pale"! It's odd how attuned you became to their habits. He just seems a bit...vacant.

I'll see how he is tomorrow but probably go to the vet on Monday. Thank you!

Sounds like he's in pain to me.

Definitely vets on Monday.

PacifyLulu · 15/05/2021 14:38

A change in behaviour indicates something is going on so I’d take him

Shylo · 15/05/2021 14:40

I’d definitely take him to get checked over - somethings wrong, you know your dog and since it’s been going on for more than a few days I’d say it’s worth a visit

squeaver · 15/05/2021 14:58

Yes, you're all right. I'll go on Monday.

Vet yes. It sounds like he might be in pain. Dogs are very stoical about pain.

itsnotmeitsu · 16/05/2021 22:03

I'd definately consult the vet. Fingers crossed for you that it's something that can be diagnosed and treated. Dogs can suffer from dementia and that'd be something I'd want to rule out.

BakedBeansBang · 16/05/2021 22:08

I'm a vet 😊. I would recommend taking him for a check-up. His behaviour sounds odd and a full clinical examination may pick up the reason for that.

squeaver · 17/05/2021 12:04

Well, I'm embarrassed to say that I think I got to the bottom of this medical mystery by myself.

The poor lad has been due a groom for a while and he'd got particularly overgrown around his face...and his eyes. So I gave him a little trim myself on Saturday evening - basically got rid of his Claudia Winkleman fringe - and he's completely back to his old self! Chasing squirrels through the woods with his mate this morning, stretched out contentedly in the sun now. He's also getting a proper groom on Friday.

Of course, I'll keep an eye on him and huge thanks for all your support but it looks like it's fixed now!
