Beddy whippet?

My ddog had to be PTS a few months ago and we're starting to think about another dog. Ive always loved whippets, greyhounds, lurcher type dogs and particularly beddy whippets. I'm concerned about their prey drive though. If we had one from puppy would we be able to train it not to chase cats? Would it chase smaller dogs? We live near the beach and I'd like to be able to take it for walks off lead and not worry about it chasing things? Anyone with any advice?

The beddy in them did seem to make them quite hairy though but they weren't massively tall. A bit more sturdily built than some other lurchers I've known

As DobbleWobble says, the recall is important - but from my experience, having a brilliant Stay works really well in situations when a recall does not. I would work on both. Good Luck!

I've now put a deposit down on one; the mum is a whippet and the dad is a Bedlington whippet so I suppose mine will be a bit more whippet than Bedlington. Ive only had Jack Russells and a spaniel before and with those we never had any formal training but they learnt the basics - recall to their name; stay etc just in a very natural, intuitive way and I trusted them when off lead. Will I need a proper puppy trainer to help? Obviously I'm more conscious of training because of their prey drive. We don't have cats or other pets but next door does.

I’ve got a 14 week old one and he’s wonderful. He been as easy to train as any other dog I’ve had so far and he’s pretty chilled out with the cats. I expect he’ll go though a horrible teenager phase as some point but at the moment he’s easy and very laid back - apart from the teeth, he’s like a baby shark! Grin
