10 month old puppy suddenly crying at night

Dpup has always been great at night. Was in a crate in our room initially and cried for toilet but was super easy to settle and soon slept through and moved his crate to the dining room where he’s slept since October. This week he’s been whimpering at night and doesn’t need anything. We moved the crate back to our room last night where he still did cry a little bit only 20 minutes on and off rather then the hour or more he was doing.

Dh asked a few colleagues who have older pups and they all went through the same. Their solution? Pup now sleeps on their bed! After years of disturbed sleep from cats we are keen to keep dpup off our bed. Any advice? Do we need to be stronger or are we causing issues by not going to him when he cries?

Mine eventually migrated to our bedroom and now sleeps on the bed so I have nothing useful to add Grin

He might be ok out of the cage but not on the bed , could you put him a bed on the landing or in your room ? Alternatively do you have a spare bed he could sleep on , or a child he could share with .

Can you move his bed into your room or on the landing behind a baby gate?

Ours sleeps in our bed Grin

Would he be happier in his own bed rather than the cage? Is the door shut?

If you dont want him on your bed do NOT listen to anyone who suggests it.

Things to consider:-

Is he cold?
Is he hungry he may need an increase in food if having a growth spurt.
Could he be in pain?
Does he need a wee?
Has anything changed food, routine, people animals in the house?
Is he getting enough sleep in the day?
What are his evenings like?
Does anything or a noise disturb him?

I would put an item of your clothing in his bed with him.

Where does he sleep in the day?

None of my dogs will ever sleep on my bed now or in the future.Smile

He sleeps all over in the day but often chooses his crate and always goes in over night. I’m not ready to leave him out of the crate over night as he’s still chewing stuff. We did accidentally leave his crate door open last week and he went nuts barking. I went to investigate and he e seemed to be telling me the door was open Grin

Bedtime his crate is now in our bedroom and he’s settling well but we’re also taking him round the block before bed. I’m going to buy a new bed for the downstairs and see how he goes without a crate downstairs during the day.

We had exactly the same thing happen at that age, I think ddog just realised he didn't want to sleep on his own any more in the crate.

He now sleeps on a rug on my bedroom floor.
