Saluki owners - hair question

Hi folks,

We have a saluki lurcher - we've had him for about a year. He is a rescue dog and the rescue said he was about 3 when we got him, but of course nobody really knows (he was found as a stray so his history is unknown).

When we got him, the hair on his ears was a little bit long - you could tell he was a saluki of sorts - but not really long. It's grown by at least an inch and a half over the past year. I love it! I was just wondering, out of curiosity: does it keep growing? Does it depend on the saluki type? He's feathered, with a feathered tail as well. I've no real reason for wanting to know this as I don't intend to trim it but I'd love it if it got even longer :-)

Hi - I have a Saluki/possibly whippet, no idea really! Her ear feathers probably reached their adult length when she was about one and a half to two-ish I think. Haven't grown since but it I'd love it if they did. I've seen quite a few pure bred Salukis and the ears feathers are amazing - very long and super glam :D

So in our case they got to a certain length and then stopped :)

Aww, I love a saluki! My current foster puppy has lovely floofy saluki ears and a feathered tail.
The feathering gets to a certain length and stops, so don't trim them.
And we need a picture of course!

Thanks folks! I wonder if he is younger than the rescue thought given the hair growth this past year! Before and after pics attached Smile.

That second pic 😂 What a poser!

Here's mine - no feathers, sadly, but she's got the Saluki face (and the massive sense of entitlement)

@JesusInTheCabbageVan he’s a total poser!

Your girl is lovely. So true about the sense of entitlement! That is our dog all over - it’s hilarious! He’s such a different character to the other lurcher I had growing up.

I just love that they're before and after pics as well. Like it's only once his full plumage had grown in that he felt ready to unleash . Grin

We've only had greyhounds prior to ours, and we thought it would be basically the same...

I feel I may recognise your ddog op!! From a rescue site page. I have a saluki /deerhound. Sadly no fluffy ears. She is 16 months.

CMOTDibbler · 17/03/2021 14:44

He's so gorgeous! I have to say I wouldn't have put him as 3 in the first picture, but giving an age is really hard, and sometimes I think when they've had a hard time they are developmentally behind.

There is something special about salukis. My ddog1 is such a snowflake princess, and quite a lot of our fosters have a healthy dose - this is two of my former fosters, one of whom we met up with yesterday for a massive run round in the secure field

have you got your dog DNA tested? We thought our rescue dog was a lurcher but looked like a saluki do got him tested and he’s 100% Saluki. I wonder how long it will take for his ears to grow long too.

Can’t really help with your question as my saluki/greyhound mix is the sleekest shiniest lurcher I’ve ever had! The black and tan colour pattern is her only saluki characteristic (and the stubborn independence, insane prey drive, and sun worshipping.)

My Saluki is 19 months and I'd say in the last month her feathering of the ears has got longer. She's got the most amazing ears now!

My saluki /deerhound cross had a beard but no fluffy ears. Dh is gutted.
Then her beard fell out. Actually accused dd of cutting it off!.
