Poorly dog. Do we go back to the vets or wait?

BastardDog isn't well. He was copiously sick on Wednesday night and had a fairly horrible poo. Thursday, he was sick again and had loose poo, but seemed ok in himself other than a bit knackered.

Since then, he has had two overnight poo accidents and just had another one - no idea why he didn't bloody bark to go out. He had had a poo an hour earlier on a walk. It is just liquid now. He has been at least seven times today and is bloody shattered.

We took him to the vet yesterday- he had an anti-vomiting injection, worming pill and stool firmer plus probiotics. Vet said to come back on Tuesday/Wednesday if he was no better. Would I be unreasonable to go back tomorrow?

No go back. I am a firm believer in that you know when your dog is not well and yes have been there when BiteyDog has not got any better.

To put this in perspective. It's private medicine. You are paying for them to see your dog. In the Uk we are so conditioned with the NHS which is free at the point of service that we worry we are taking another persons vet appointment but if you explain the issue the vet nurse on reception can triage in terms of urgency. And in my experience if you say they aren't getting better then they are more than happy to see you they say.

And in my experience if you say they aren't getting better then they are more than happy to see you that day

Lougle · 07/03/2021 19:16

Are you sticking to a rice/chicken diet?

dogsaremypeople · 07/03/2021 19:18

My dog was like this when he had a blockage, def go back tomorrow

Moondust001 · 07/03/2021 19:20

Go back. Ask the vet if the wormer works for giardia - some don't, and it could be that.

PilatesPeach · 07/03/2021 19:22

Go back - the dog is obviously not right - I would not hesitate myself - must be suffering

Calmestofallthechickens · 07/03/2021 19:27

I would take him back to your vet. Vets would always rather see a pet (even if it’s unnecessary) than have someone wait too long with a genuinely sick pet.

Often with diarrhoea and vomiting bugs, they do ‘self cure’ over a few days with just a bit of supportive care (ie what you have been given); however, severe cases sometimes need more intensive support like going on a drip or painkillers, and if he’s seeming very tired/lethargic then this might be the case for him.

Depending on the vets’ impression when they examine him, they might also want to do other tests to rule out things like a blockage or a specific infection.

BadEyeBri · 07/03/2021 20:37

Yup. Back to vet tomorrow. Poor doggo. Try to get some water into him.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 07/03/2021 21:16

What are you feeding him?

pilates · 07/03/2021 21:22

Go back. I hope he gets better soon 💐

Sadsiblingatsea · 07/03/2021 21:26

When my dog had similar symptoms my vet prescribed a probiotic called Nutrabio natural intestinal support. I’ve used it on my other dogs as well when they’ve had diarrhoea and it’s worked very well.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 07/03/2021 22:06

He has been on a chicken and rice diet since Friday. Well, mostly chicken because he sprays the rice everywhere picking through it.

He hasn't pooed since 6.30pm which is an improvement. I am worried about giardia and also about a possible blockage, but they felt his tummy and it was OK.

DH is off work at the moment so he is sitting with him tonight in a bid to prevent any more poo in the house, and then we will decide tomorrow what to do. Poor baby

Yes go back. When my dog was like this recently she needed a day on a drip.

Newname1239 · 07/03/2021 22:42

Go back! My Ddog nearly died this week from a horrific stomach infection. He started with exactly the same symptoms as you have described OP. There are so many bugs around at the moment. Please go get him looked at

SirVixofVixHall · 08/03/2021 10:52

Hope doggie is a bit better today OP.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 08/03/2021 17:45

He has been back. We have antibiotics and he is going back again on Wednesday to check his hydration. Stool sample being sent away tomorrow.

Bless him, I still got a lovely welcome when I came in from work.

I hope he is on the mend soon OP.

HandyBendySandy · 08/03/2021 18:06

Aww, hope he starts improving soon. My dog was horribly poorly recently, tested positive for salmonella, campylobacter AND giardia! But they suspect he has IBD, which left him wide open to infections anyway. This house has seen an awful lot of dog vomit, bless him.

They are surprisingly resilient though. Wishing him better. Flowers
