Taking 12/13/14 week old pup out

We are due to bring our fur baby home in August. We are looking at buying tickets to Burghley horse trials at the start of September.

We are wondering if we could take the pup? We could carry him/her between etc. Or is it completely crazy and i should stay at home and my husband and daughter go?

I would be worried about all the noise and people getting the pup overwhelmed/frightened which could make it a negative experience for them.

What type of dog? My pup is 15 weeks and would be a menace, bark at the horses etc. I don't think she would be scared though.
I think I would leave her with a friend for the day.

If Burghley is even running :)
I think it will be fine. As long as you can carry him. I assume you will walk and find a nice spot to hang out in and watch the CC so he can play around from one spot and nap whenever he wants to. Maybe bring a doggie back pack to save his legs.

It’s a golden retriever :)

Hopefully it will be on, fingers crossed lol.

We are hoping to book a car picnic spot so we have our own little area but if not we would find some where to sit and relax.

It depends!

Such an annoying answer but the only one anyone can give.

Depends on the puppy
Depends on how far you have to travel
Depends on the weather
Depends on what you plan to do when you are there - a puppy will restrict you
Depends on who is willing to look after the puppy
Depends if there is any where for the puppy to sleep
Depends on how long you plan to stay a whole day may be pushing it

But the main one is the first one - it depends on the puppy

I wouldn't. Find a sitter for your furry friend.

I wouldn't want to be carrying a three month old pup around all day and when you are tired it would be too tempting to put it down. I would leave it at home with someone.

Hmm my 15 week flat coat retriever is a) pretty hefty now and you wouldn't want to carry her a long way. B) she hates being carried and would have your face off!

I guess if you could park somewhere shady and quiet then you could take the puppy for a bit and if she got tired (or tiresome) put her in her crate in the car for a sleep? It might make your day more complicated though

sunflowersandbuttercups · 02/03/2021 09:25

I wouldn't, for several reasons:

  • puppies need lots of sleep and that's unlikely to happen on a hot, busy day in August with lots of new sights, smells etc.
  • the weather could be too warm for it to be outside all day.
  • it could be extremely overwhelming and turn into a negative experience. You need to be very careful with socialisation at this age.
  • I wouldn't fancy carrying around a hot, wriggly and overtired puppy all day - I think you'll be too tempted to let her walk all day which wouldn't be great for her joints.
  • toileting could be an issue if she's not trained properly.

I would stay home with her or ask someone to mind her for the day. I think a long hot summer day out is huge amount to ask for such a young puppy.

We have an 11 week old who has only just started going for walks. He is very cautious when he is out, easily spooked by new things despite being a pretty confident dude, and gets tired quickly (within 10-15 mins).

There is no way he could cope with a full hot day at a show, even if you popped him in a pram.

Ah how exciting Grin

I remember when ours were born - our breeder had messaged us in the night and I woke DH up screaming, lol.
