Dog scared of the beach after a traumatic experience

I am fostering a 5-month-old puppy and a few days ago I was walking her on the beach when a huge unexpected wave came and washed the pup off her feet.

She was on the lead so didn't get swept away but definitely would have if she wasn't!

She is now absolutely petrified of the beach and completely refuses to walk. Unfortunately, where I live (in Asia) there are no parks or pavements so the only place you can properly walk a dog is on the beach.

I have tried giving her treats (chicken) while on the beach but she isn't interested. She will go to the furthest point away from the sea she can and refuse to move from that spot.

Before the wave incident, she loved the beach and would walk along nicely.

Does anyone have some advice on how I can cure her fear of the beach?

If you join the ‘Dog training advice and support’ Facebook group (which is run by dog behaviourists) they have lots of tips and advice for this sort of thing and if it’s not covered in the units you can post for specific advice.

Our pup went through a scary incident when he was around that age. We spoke to a behaviourist who advised us that they need time to forget what happened so if you can, avoid the beach altogether for at least 5 days.

Okay thanks both! I will check out that Facebook group
