Is it ok for a young puppy go out to wee in the snow?

Our long-awaited new puppy arrived on Saturday. She's been doing superbly well with her toilet training. On advice on here we just used puppy pads the first day or so while she settled and then decided we'd try without them and she's been a little star so far - she hasn't had any accidents in the house at all. But we had snow last night; I hadn't checked the forecast, wasn't expecting it at all - and realise I don't know whether it's ok for an 8 week old pup to go out in snow to go to the toilet? Obviously she is only out for a few minutes at a time. But I'm not sure whether it's ok at all? We could get a coat for her, but it wasn't something we had bought in advance (not knowing exactly how big she'd be at 8 weeks) and now I feel that if we stop taking her out and revert to puppy pads it's going backwards. Just wondering what people think? I'm new to this! thanks

Yes she can go out, and throw away the puppy pads - you should be taking her out every time.
No point teaching her to toilet inside when you want it done outside.
She might appreciate putting a coat on her, mine does when it’s raining.

I'd take her out..but clear a patch of snow as she may not understand she can pee in snow!

Well we didn't have snow but it was bloody freezing when I was toilet training my puppy in the height of winter and we just went out whatever the weather. I actually think it helped as he will now go out and pee very quickly when he is desperate no matter what the weather is like.

Yup stick her out my boy would abs has been out in it he’s a bit older but they need to learn where to pee or they’ll be doing it in the house. I didn’t use puppy pads at all as I don’t want him thinking he can go in house. Have a wee towel for pup when it comes in and praise for doing wee/poo we have a command when he goes outside then lots of praise when he goes and a treat.

Good luck - we got our pup in October I’d never want to toilet train in winter again it’s been so cold. Enjoy pup

It's absolutely fine.

Put her out in all weathers - it means she'll get used to it.

That's great, thanks for the reassurance everyone. We just used puppy pads on the first day (wasn't intending to use them at all, but she was so scared when we took her out in the garden on the first day that I sent dh out to buy some). From day 2 onwards we haven't used any pads and she hasn't had any accidents at all so far - I'm so surprised and impressed! I've been taking her out today without thinking anything of it, just trying to keep the trips outside short, but then I got suddenly worried that I was doing the wrong thing and she might be too little to be out in the snowl. I have cleared a couple of patches of grass, but she wants to run on the snow anyway! I'm off to look at Amazon for coats for her now. Can anyone recommend a good brand?

If she's running around and not out for too long, she may not need a coat. I wouldn't want to be faffing around with coats when putting a pup out for a pee, for sure.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/02/2021 18:37

Though of course we can't really judge the necessity or type of coat without a picture...Grin

@ErrolTheDragon oh all right then Grin

She looks furry and active (and very sweet, obvGrin) Does she actually seem cold when she's out? My dogs never wanted coats except when we were stopped for a picnic at the tops of windy hills - short haired dachshunds. They never seemed to mind the snow either despite their short legs!

StillMedusa · 03/02/2021 01:05

Oh super cute!
I do have a coat for my very fluffy double coated girl...but purely for days when it's hammering down because she gets so soggy and takes hours to dry!

Scoobydoobydoo · 03/02/2021 09:53

@Dappled she is gorgeous
what breed is she?

XiCi · 03/02/2021 10:55

Oh she is lovely OP. What breed?

Dappled · 03/02/2021 14:37

She's a lovely mix up! More Tibetan terrier than anything else, but she also has papillon and Chinese crested powder puff in the mix.
