Any advice for my ill puppy?

Hello and thank you in advance for any advice. My puppy has had sickness and diarrhoea since Saturday night. Some blood in the diarrhoea. Vet gave painkiller injection, anti emetic and some intestinal care medicine. Said she couldn't feel any obstruction, just tenderness in one area.

Tonight she is dragging her bottom around in the snow and whimpering constantly. Some bits of diarrhoea, tiny specks of blood. It's heartbreaking.

Does anyone have any advice? Do I wait until the vet opens tomorrow? Anyone who's been in a similar situation, I'd really appreciate your comments. She's a six month old retriever cross who came over from Romania two months ago.

Crikey, that sounds awful, I would take her to the vet again now, I wouldn`t wait until they open tomorrow. Do you have an emergency number for them?

SquidInALid · 25/01/2021 22:05

I agree. Vets asap.

Do you know if the vet checked the anal glands. I'm guessing it's the same as cats can get. One of my older cats used to drag his bum on the carpet sometimes. Like you said can also get diarrhoea with blood sometimes. They can get blocked and very sore and uncomfortable for them and a vet would have to manually squeeze them out to clear it. Sounds grim I know.

It’s a stupid question but did the vet know the dog came from Romania? There can be some illnesses that dogs have in different countries that vets wouldn’t necessarily think of in the U.K.

Giardia (spelling?) ruled out?
With that behaviour and blood too I would contact vet ASAP.
Good luck.

Thank you all. I'll try the vets. We did mention that she'd come from Romania, the vet checked her passport and said she'd had all the right jabs.

I'm not sure if she checked the anal glands as we couldn't go in, and she didn't say. I would have thought so.

Thanks again Thanks

DDunePup has just had similar. Despit sticking religiously to the worming schedule and using the expensive wormer (vet's recommendation based on DPup eating everything including snails and other dogs' poo), she got pretty much everything (as showed up by the poo sample sent to the lab at vast expense).

If it's just traces of bright red blood in mucus-y diarrhea, it's likely to be inflammation of the gut lining rather than anything else, but do get the vet to check again

A course of panacur sorted it, but be warned, initially the panacur may make things worse as all the parasites die en masse and further irritate the gut lining (several explosive poo episodes in the small hours, shudder!)
