Anybody Owned a Dog That Never Barks?

We've had our boy for nearly two years now. He's getting on for 10. His background is very successful ex-racer, and then used for breeding. He is terrified of everything outside of his normal experiences, which makes life a bit difficult. He's our fourth rescue dog (all sight hounds), but before him we haven't had a dog that has never barked. He is the most gentle creature; even though he spends his days frightened, couldn't image him attacking anything.

Anybody else had this experience? We're doing all we can, but would love him to feel that our garden, as well as his house, is safe.

My dog is very quiet, nervy girl though. She's a jrt/collie cross.
Previous dog had the loudest and most shrill bark I have ever heard but thankfully barked very little. DH took her to obedience classes where she barked incessantly for an hour, came home with a splitting headache every time.

Our dog only barks if he wants to be let back in from the garden (single woof), if someone is at the door (until we tell him there is no-one there, it's the postman, etc) or if the ice-cream van comes (he always gets a 50p cone from the ice cream man!).

Ours is a barky breed so we've been very careful never to respond to him if he does. He now doesn't bark indoors or on walks. He does in the garden if he hears other dogs but we wait until he's quiet. At least he doesn't bark for the sake of it or to be let in, which is better than we had expected.

Our Lhasa Apso is a pain in the backside for barking. Today she is barking because she can see white through the frosted glass by the front door (snow) if it wasn't that it would be something else.

A friends dog that we look after occasionally doesn't bark. She is a mixed breed rescue. She will on rare occasion let out a quiet little bark if you close her out of a room you are in, but that is all. She is the sweetest thing, and I couldn't cope with a dog that barked.

I’ve always had rescues and none of them have been barkers. Our westie was so quiet she barked once at a cat and scared herself so much!

Our current dog is also a rescue and has only barked a couple of times but heartbreaking, each time he’s barked, he’s cowered as if he’s going to get hit

Our neighbors dog barks all the time though- we hear her at 3am every morning when she goes out for a wee! Our dog looks out the window bleary eyed then settles back down

I have two greyhounds that are very noisy but rarely bark. Groans, snorts, wheezes, singing, farts, whistling like a kettle, and grumbling, yes.
