Husband allergic to new dog

Not terribly but sneezes a lot and very snotty and sniffy. Been going on a while and coincides with arrival of our dog. Dog can’t go. Husband can’t obviously! Any solutions? Piriton works bit makes him sleepy.

I'd try a different antihistamine to start with see if that works without the drowsiness.

We had this with my daughter when she was a young teen, and one of our dogs. It was very odd, dog was the same breed as the other we’d had for 3 years at the time of his arrival, and she’d never reacted before, but this one left her itchy, snotty, sniffly and sneezy. We saw the GP who prescribed a non drowsy antihistamine, after about 6 months she seemed to ‘acclimatise’ to him (we found out by accident when we went on holiday with the dogs and she forgot her antihistamines), so she came off them. She’s never had a problem since. I’ve heard it’s fairly common to be allergic at first, with symptoms easing or disappearing over time.

Have you had the dog groomed since you had him? It could be that your husband is allergic to the dog’s dander. I have a dog allergy but oddly enough I’m not allergic to my dog’s breed as it is a double-coated one and therefore dander is less likely to reach the surface. Maybe try that to see if there is any difference to the allergic reaction and consider scheduling a regular grooming session as a way to try and make them compatible?

Thanks all.

Will order the Petal Cleanse and hope things settle down.

I'm allergic to dog hair and get VERY itchy, but a standard non drowsy antihistamine from the pharmacy does the trick.

Not dogs...

But my DP is mildly allergic to cats - he’ll react like that to any strange cat, but with ours it settles down after a while and goes away.

I was coming to recommend Petal Cleanse as well - my friend who was severely allergic to cats now lives perfectly happily with three of them thanks to using it.
