Kennel Cough - Any home remedies for the symptoms

My dog appears to have kennel cough, called the vets and they have said that it should go away on it’s own, keep him away from other dogs etc.

Obviously they won’t prescribe anything without seeing him, bit habe said it’s not really necessary just yet.

However I really feel for him hacking his guts up in the middle of a heatwave and wondered if there’s anything I can give him to try and ease it a bit - as in maybe honey or similar (not medication.)

Does anyone know of anything that helps? Or is it just a case of letting him ride it out.

Could you take him in the bathroom with you when you have a shower? The steam should help his cough a bit. It’s horrible to see them hacking. Hope he feels better soon.

Good idea - he follows me into the bathroom every time anyway. Not sure I’m up for a scalding hot shower today though Smile.

I thought that after I posted my message! Might have to be a very late night shower. 😄

Baby tixylix helps soothe their throats , at least it helps mine and he loves it .

My rescue dog had Kennel cough when I got her about 15 years ago now. She was really ill with it and it lasted for weeks, snotty nose, cough, really horrible. Took multiple visits to the vet over a period of weeks before she finally got over it. Keep a close eye on the dog as the symptoms seem to vary in severity a lot.

Thankfully other than the coughing he seems okay. Just really feel for him -hacking his little lungs up in the middle of a heatwave. Am wondering whether something like an ice cream for dogs is a good idea (they sell it around my local park so could go and grab one for him.)
