Anyone have a collie type dog, that they clip?

I have a collie type dog, don't think she is full border, some type of mix in there.
I know cocker and Springer spaniels are sometimes clipped, but never seen a collie clipped. Has anyone seen a clipped collie or clip their own dog.
She gets very hot, and I think about doing it, but don't want to ruin her coat.
Wondering what the difference is, between collies and spaniels.

I don't clip my collies, mine are double coated. My understanding is that is clipping will ruin a double coat. However there is a great (I will see if I can find it) article on why double coated fur actually keeps dogs cooler than if you are to clip it. The undercoat protects the heat from getting to the dog.

Do keep the dog brushed regularly though as this stops the build up of thick matted hair which of course would make a dog hot.

I have two collie x springers. One has a springer type coat and we do get her clipped normally once a year as it's just more comfortable for her in warm weather. The other one has a collie type coat and we don't clip her. This was on the advice of a groomer friend who said collies need a good brushing rather than clipping.

So cocker and Springer are single coated, and collie, double coated? How do you tell, her coat is quite thick. Likes to be indoors in this weather, as soon as it's dark, she wants to be outside, would stay out all night if I let her, which I don't.

No idea about clipping collies, sorry, but Springers are double coated, not as much as collies, etc.

Our groomer deals with our springer about 4 times a year, she doesn’t clip her

My Shetland sheepdogs are double coated- the top fur is long then underneath it’s v similar to sheep’s wool around the hind quarters a underside but not on top.you can see it if you push the fur to one side .the underlayer is v soft and close together-

Hi, I'm a dog groomer so hopefully can help a little bit.
Double coated dogs (collies, GSD, newfies etc) should not be clipped, it can damage their coat (coat funk) and cause problems. They won't overheat as long as they are being brushed regularly which is the same for all long haired dogs, as long as there is no matts it doesn't matter how long the coat is as the air is able to circulate. Double coated dogs especially are brilliant at being able to regulate their own temperature. The only reason that they should ever be clipped is for welfare so if they have a medical condition that would need it to be done or if they were badly matted and the only option is to shave.
Most groomers will do a "bath and deshed" option and that gets all the dead undercoat out which is the hair that they can shed. This isn't the same as being clipped.

Spaniels have what's called a "silky coat" - breed standard for them is to be hand stripped, however, changes in the breed can affect the coat which may make it unstrippable, this includes if they've been clipped previously or sometimes once they've been dressed/neutered.
Spaniels can be clipped if owners prefer this to hand stripping. It may make their coat grow back thicker and curly rather than the smooth coats you'll see on springers and some cockers. But it doesn't cause coat funk or damage the fur in any way being clipped.

Don't, some dogs are seriously scary when they are freshly clipped
