How do you stop a bitch ruining the lawn?

DH likes a nice lawn and is thinking ahead for when puppy is bigger that she will leave bleached patches in the grass.
There are rocks you can put in their bowl, tablets, and even a yellow steak you put in the ground to train them to wee in one place.
Does anyone have any success stories with any of these?
If you have a bitch do you have a ruined lawn?

I’ve got an intact male and he’s scorched my grass
hiredandsqueak · 27/04/2020 17:49
Bella doesn't scorch our lawn. She has been spayed no idea if that's the reason why though. She also does most of her peeing on her walks. The best way I have found to get her to pee in one spot is to take Eric out on his lead when he visits and tell him to pee in a particular spot. This will ensure that Bella will only pee over that until it rains and washes it away.

I have 4 dogs all neutered/spayed no damage to our grass, all big water drinkers though.
It’s the nitrogen in the urine that burns it, you could train her to only pee in one area, maybe a woodchipped part, artificial grass or a set corner

My neutered dog ruins my lawn but he does pee like a bitch.
The stake in the ground was a waste of money. I am not happy to use the rocks in the water bowl and my understanding is that if your dog drinks from other sources then it won't work (mine prefers any other water source than his bowl).
What we do is have watering cans lying about and when he pees on the lawn we water that area. Any areas we miss are dug out and reseeded in the summer months. It is a pain to keep doing but it's the only thing we have found works.

My neutered female cats pee has scorched my lawn. I started pouring a bucket of water over where she had peed at the time and that seemed to neutralise it. You have to keep watch though!
Veterinari · 27/04/2020 18:15
The only way is to dilute the urine - keep a bucket or watering can handy and rinse after they pee
Disfordarkchocolate · 27/04/2020 18:18
Our dog wasn't allowed to wee in the garden. That's what walks were for. Much cleaner.
Judashascomeintosomemoney · 27/04/2020 18:21
Three bitches, none have ever ruined the grass. All spayed. As PP said though, all v big water drinkers (even the greyhound) so that might have an impact.
RedRiverHog · 27/04/2020 18:25
I don't find my either my dog or bitch's urine ruins the grass but it's still a state from them running around in winter. I have to reseed parts every year.
gatsbylove · 27/04/2020 18:48
It's all about
- how concentrated the dog's pee is (i.e. how hydrated they are)
- how wet or dry the soil under the grass is
- the dog's peeing habit, whether they pee all on one exact spot or spread it about a bit by, for example, peeing up something
Strong pee, in one spot, onto dry ground is too much nitrogen for the grass so burns it.
Mild pee, or pee spread around a bit or pee diluted by water in the soil, is less likely to burn.

Very helpful all thank you.
YaasssQueen · 27/04/2020 20:27
My spayed girl drinks masses. And still burns the grass. Will try the watering can tip, thank you!
(Strangely, a past bitch obvs had different wee bcause she made the grass grow like fury wherever she urinated)
exLtEveDallas · 27/04/2020 20:33
Dessert spoon of tomato ketchup in her food. Our mutt ruined the grass at out last place, a friend with working dogs (10 of them) told me about the ketchup and it worked almost immediately.

Interesting! My 3 year old spayed bitch is ruining our lawn... going to try watering it down straight afterwards

Yep. Nitrogen is a fertiliser. Too much burns but if it's not too strong then it'll fertilise the grass beautifully.

Dog rocks.
MrsTumbletap · 28/04/2020 08:14
@exLtEveDallas ketchup?! Wow never heard that one before!
MrsTumbletap · 28/04/2020 08:15
@TheSandgroper what dog rocks do you use?
TheSandgroper · 28/04/2020 09:12
I don’t know if they are available in the UK.

My MIL always added tomato juice to the dog's food. Certainly she didn't have bleached patches on the lawn but we didn't really either without the tomato. I think our dogs usually peed on the gravel outside the front door .
