Best way to train a puppy to go on the lead?

He's only 10 weeks so not going out and about for another two weeks or so, but I'd like to use this time to start lead training. At the moment he will have it on and walk with you but only in very small places, eg one room. The minute you ask him to move around the house he just sits down and pulls back so I give him the slack but we can't get going after that! Any tips would be appreciated.

I used to put the lead on ours and just let him out in the garden trailing it behind him so he got used to it.
At puppy class we were taught to use a treat to bribe him. So I would be walking stooped with a treat in my hand luring him along. Used to use the word close but some say heel etc so that pup associated the word with the action. Every few steps we gave him a treat. We still follow this idea at times

I know this sounds silly but put it in his basket so that it smells of him. Make sure he doesn't chew on it, so keep an eye. You can just let him lie down with it, smell it, be a bit curious about it.
Once it has his smell, it won't seem as intimidating. Also, every time you clip it on him, give him a treat. You'll need a few treats to get him to cooperate. But you can dial back on the treats as he becomes more accustomed to it. Good luck.

Good luck. I have no tips but just wanted to mention that mine tried to chew the lead on every single occasion we tried it before leaving the house. And no matter what high value treat we used he wasn't interested in walking nicely or putting up with the lead in the garden. I watched lots of food driven dogs at puppy class be lured with treats to walk on the lead whilst mine twirled around ignoring everyone including the trainer.

I would recommend a metal lead, (or at least one that's metal at the bottom) for a while - mine ate through two leads in a day when he was teething, and no manner of treats could distract him!

Otherwise I have no advice. We got our puppy at 12 weeks and we just took him out straight away on-lead and he was fine.

He's gorgeous! I've got a 12 week old springer pup. I was told to give him a treat each time we clipped the lead on. And then let him walk about with it trailing for a while. Then try walking. This worked for him to accept the lead (although he chews it and runs around in circles). Maybe you could spend some more time in a small room walking about and giving him treats and then venture gradually to other parts of the house? Good luck!
