What cage do you have in your car?

We've just bought a new car and therefore need a new cage (ATM we have a foldable indoor crate which is undesirable in sooo many ways!)

In the past I've used TransK9 but they are pricey (though available on finance) Also have lots of friends with Lintran but have never used them myself (and they always seem to look quite grotty after a while)

Does anyone have any other recommendations before I give DH a heart attack and show him the TransK9 site?

I have one from this company. Extremely reasonably price and it's a brilliant crate as it folds flat when I need the boot space in an emergency.

I also use it a lot if we are travelling or staying at friends houses as it's pretty spacious.

I've got a VarioCage which, although also quite pricey, has been excellent. I'll have had it ten years this summer and it's still pretty much good as new despite a lot of use. Even though it's a big one (it's a double XXL) I can get it in and out of the car on my own just fine.

Barjo for me - custom built guard, tailgate and divider with shelf on top. Not cheap, but part of the cost of a new car for me every time.

Thanks for the recommendations. The wire cages are no good for us, we have gun dogs and the back of our old car has suffered terribly from their associated mud and hair being flung out the cage

It's always been an extra expense whenever we change cars, but it's been such a long time since I had a new car!

I have a Barjo tailgate guard but only because I can't fit three large labs in a TransK9.

You can get good nick ones second hand - there's a whole Facebook group dedicated to it so I'd maybe look there first.

I wanted a crash tested crate for the car and got the 4petsPRO 3 large. It was expensive but has been good. It is quite enclosed on 3 sides though so can get warm in summer.

We have a grille between boot and back seats and a tailgate guard that can be removed fairly easily but also locked (you can't get to the removal lugs if the gate is locked shut). The door in the guard is big enough to get most stuff in the boot as needed. Much easier to go to the tip or do a uni run than taking the bloody crate out used to be.

The FB site seems to confirm that good quality cages hold their value, and also how few actually come on the market. Based on this I intend to get DH outrageously drunk before suggesting we purchase a TransK9 - we will gloss over the fact that, in the past, I have bought cars for less money Grin

It's worth looking at the marketplace on Agilitynet for second hand ones too:

I have a second hand variocage, but will have to look into tailgate guard as I'm hoping to get a second dog and they both won't fit in the cage!

Imonaplane · 20/02/2020 19:48

I have gun dogs and I don't think you can beat the TransK9. I know they are quite expensive but you get what you pay for.

Funny you should say that imonaplane , guess what's arriving next Friday?! 😆
