Male or female puppy

Hello, I am hopefully going to be getting a new puppy in April. I have always had male animals but this time around there is a possibility I might end up taking a female. After my elderly dog passed away last year, I am slightly nervous (but excited!) about a new puppy and a female is making me even more nervous as it would be completely new territory for me.

Just looking to see if people have a preference and if so, why . The puppy will be an Alaskan Malamute, this will be the third one I have owned.

I have one of each - labs. Female is younger and not top dog, and she’s a rescue so didn’t know her as a pup. So that’s my disclaimer...
She is bright, biddable, very smart and easy to train - less stubborn that the male.
That said she has a temper and tells him off when he annoys her ; she has no patience. We adore her...

We wanted a male pup
But there weren’t any in the litter so we got a girl
Honestly having seen the male dogs of her breed -( seem quite uptight, territorial and humpy!) We don’t regret it one bit!
I appreciate that’s not always the experience but she’s perfect to us

We decided to go for a female puppy, and visited quite a few litters to find the one. We then had a super strong connection with a male pup and went with our gut feeling. He's absolutely perfect and I'm glad we went with personality over pre-made plans.

My husband and I prefer dogs. We have had bitches but the dogs seem more willing to please, more affectionate and generally less "bitchy".

I prefer boys, but, I think really there’s not that much difference because people say exactly the same about girls as I think about boys...

Apart from...

Good boy is much easier for me to say than good girl, I have a very Scottish accent and girl comes out, gurrrul... so.... much less effective as a marker, lol

@tabulahrasa we were told by a few trainers you shouldn’t say girl or boy in your marker anyway! Just ‘good’ - quicker so it’s clear what the good behaviour was

I only say as it may change your mind on future little gurrrull furbabys

I had no real preferences, but kind of assumed I'd get a boy (there seemed to be a preference for girls on my breeder's list)

As it happened I got a girl, and she's awesome. I have nothing to compare with but she's been a dream so far (except tonight when she's become a teenage arse), amazing to toilet train and basic training... and best of all no willy sticking up at me when I rub her belly.
She's affectionate and funny and definitely has a bit of girl attitude. She's just had her first season and I was not looking forward to it, but it was fine.. a few drips here and there and she kept herself beautifully clean, and we just went on a long line for 3 weeks.
Girls are fab!

I mean to be fair, I use clickers anyway, I just add good boy and then it’s more fun when you go, who’s a good boy? You’re a good boy!!!

I’m constantly saying boy and being told off, it feels more affectionate and less formal!
I just didn’t want it to put you off a gorgeous little girl!

Lol, it wasn’t a serious concern to be fair... and given I add extra Rs to lots of words...I can’t be that picky.

If I was looking for a puppy, breeder would trump my sex preference every time.

I’m kind of half looking for a slightly older rescue and sex is way down on my list of what I’m after, low enough down that if I saw a girl that was what I wanted - I’d apply.

Which was my main point really, that I think mostly it’s not a big deal.

Adopt one instead.

I think it the season that is marked different in boys and girl.
The fact you have to let them have one so really you cannot go on holiday till they have it .
And if you are going to get them done it has to be done at set time .
Lots of dog care only take dogs that have been done.
And when felmale are in season it can be about 5 weeks of different behaviour. So time consuming.

And if you have dog that needs alot of exercise . Lead walking is going to take a lot longer .

We originally wanted a male but there was only a girl left in the litter, we just mainly had no experience of a dog being in season although we always neuter anyway (and have had ours spayed). I have no regrets as she is absolutely lovely, and she is noticeably smaller than the males of the same breed. She does seem more affectionate and needy for attention than males of different breeds we've had, but that just makes us love her more!

Reading a comment up thread about tummy rubbing and agree 100%, does make tummy rubbing a lot nicer
