Has anyone here trained a puppy for hearing dogs for the deaf or similar - considering it?!

We moved recently to a semi-rural place with amazing walks and we have a one acre garden. DS (17) is desperate for a dog and has been for years but is heading to uni in 2 years or so, and I feel like dh and I are getting to a point where we can go anywhere anytime so I'm not sure if I want the commitment of a dog (we have a 14 year old cat). I regularly go on walks with my neighbours and their dogs as I enjoy the exercise and love dogs but haven't lived with one since I was a kid. I don't work so I meet the criteria for a puppy trainer and I feel like this would be a good way to see if we would be suited to dog ownership without the lifetime commitment. Thoughts/opinions?

We did just this. My daughter socialised a puppy for hearing dogs. She went to the classes and the outings and I did a lot of walks too. Was great but very sad when he went on to his next stage. We go to see him give a demo of his sound work next month before he goes to his recipient.
