My dog just ate 2 grapes

She's a 6 lb pomerianan puppy. The vets aren't open until Monday. She seems fine at the moment. What can I do?

2 shouldn't be a problem but there should be an on call vet you can contact for reassurance

The problem is you have no idea whether grapes are toxic to your dog or not until it's too late and I think from memory the symptoms won't appear until much later.

Grapes (even in small quantities like 2) can be very toxic to some dogs. Personally I wouldn't chance it and I would be on the phone to the emergency vets for advice. All vets should have a number you can phone which should put you through to the OOH cover.

It wouldn't affect my dog in the slightest but maybe a smaller dog it would.

I would really call a vet, even if it's not "your vet" - just Google the nearest vet open at the weekend.

She will probably be fine, but with a puppy/small breed I wouldn't risk it.

The problem is unless your dog has eaten grapes and survived you just don't know.

I went on a canine first aid course and the reason vets treat is they just don't know which dogs it will prove toxic to and which won't and there have been cases of fatality on low amounts (unlike chocolate which has a formula you can follow). I think it's kidney failure it can cause which is awful and I wouldn't be gambling with my dog for the sake of phoning the emergency vet.

We don't have grapes in the house anymore for that reason as I always used to drop them on the floor pre dog.

Our vet insurance had a phone line to call for advice, if that is any help, never thought to use it at the time.

I wouldn't take the chance, call someone.

You need to ring your vet, even if they don't operate their own out of hours service there should be a recorded message pointing you to where you can get help when they're closed.

Grape and raisin toxicity in dogs isn't like chocolate where it's very predictable and a calculator and quickly tell you if the amount eaten is likely to cause a problem. Some dogs can eat loads of grapes and show no ill effects whilst for others a very small amount can cause very serious problems, even death.

If she's just eaten them recently then getting her to a vet so they can induce vomiting is the best option.

I've spoken to a vet, they think my dog should be ok. However they gave me a number for a 24 hour vets just in case.

I'm surprised by the wait and see from your vet unless your dog has eaten them a while back in which case they can't induce vomiting as it's too late for that. Fingers crossed she doesn't show any symptoms.

I would still give the emergency vets a call though to get their opinion as they will be very used to those type of situations.

It depends on dogs weight so a pom puppy would be at risk from 2 grapes, I've got a cockerpoo and he was admitted to vets for one grape. if they make your dog sick now which is a really easy process at the vets, they can find the grapes in her stomach. I can't believe a vet told you it was ok! No one knows, that's the trouble with grapes - most dogs don't have a problem, and there is no "safe" level.

Is there another vet you can call/go to? Are you insured?

2 grapes for a 6lb puppy seems quite a lot and there could be kidney damage you are unaware of, I would have expected a more proactive approach by the vet. Hope your pup is ok, but if nothing else I'd get a new vet.

My dog has just eaten a lollipop stick whole. Waiting it out, will call vets in the morning. Hope your pup was ok
