I’d been looking for one of these but the only puppy support thread currently running is for older puppies. I’ve seen a few threads recently from posters who have new puppies like me, and thought I’d start our own group as I’d love to compare notes. But all welcome!

To kick off -

My pup, DartyPup, is a female poodle cross who is nearly 11 weeks old. Very sweet, friendly, fairly calm, sleeps a good stretch at night in her crate no problem and is happy to play in the garden by herself if I’m in the kitchen/conservatory and we easily have eyes on each other. She has a lot of naps and is doing well with house training.

But- she has the usual puppy traits of being needy and nippy. She loves biting bare toes and has a witching hour in the evening (as another poster aptly describes it!).

I adore the bond we seem to have bit am finding it draining. My children are old enough to be hands on and are keen to be, but their periods of peak energy don’t always correspond with the Pup’s. And when it comes down to it, she often wants me and so will whine if left with them downstairs while I escape for a rest. If they mistakenly leave a door open giving her access to the stairs, she’ll leg it up to find me. A stair gate isn’t an option unfortunately due to the design of our stairs.

Both my kids have never been particularly early risers and I’ve always been secretly pleased about dodging 6am wake up calls ... until DartyPup.

Welcome @loveliesbleeding1, clearly we need a photo of your pup though!

Twinmama32 · 07/09/2019 17:08

Argh I’m so annoyed with my puppy!
He keeps continuously digging in one corner of our sofa, I don’t know why, there’s nothing there, I remove him every time, give him something to play with etc but then he’s back!
Today he started barking and biting at me when I tried to remove him. Anyone got any suggestions?
Should I spray something acidic on the sofa to deter?

Why I had problems for the first week or two with toilet training ( I was watching him like a hawk and putting him in the garden regularily but it wasn't working at all) I decided to put my all into a last ditch attempt. So I just stayed in the garden for a week, and whenever I was inside (very little, except for his sleeps)the pup was in his crate (where he would hold on). This gave me the chance to vigorously praise any pees which did happen outside, inevitably. I also cleaned the entire floor with white vinegar, everywhere he had peed, in every room. That helped too. And I think it is quite essential, otherwise they will come back to familiar spots. I think he really didn't understand what it is that was wanted, until he started peeing in the garden and outside and being praised for it. we then had to educate him to pee in the park, that also was something he felt wasn't allowed, until he was so desperate that he did, and we praised him. Poor little things, they have such an instinct not to pee in the "wrong place".

@SkeletonSkins any update on your little pup? Poor little thing, that sounds horrible.

Bella is adorable!

We did some off lead at the local dog field today, was quiet so not much distraction. I took tiny bits of chicken and hot dog with me which he got every time he came back, he was really good. An unsuspecting dog walked by and my pup started chasing him, as soon as I called him he stopped and came back which I was really pleased with. He was so keen for the treats though he hardly left my side!
Still barking at dogs but also stopping to give them a sniff so hopefully he will get more used to being calm around them. I’ll get my kids to help with the recall too, good idea, they like teaching him things.

Jealous of the lie in @Girliefriendlikescake !!

SkeletonSkins · 07/09/2019 20:56

Thanks all for the good wishes for SkeletonPup! Vets this morning found blood and bacteria in her urine so we’re on antibiotics. Poor little sausage is dribbling all over my carpet pretty much uncontrollably so I’ve given in and just said I’ll get the carpet shampooed when she’s better. House training should be a breeze after this surely!!

However, I realised I’d got rather fond of her when I turned up at the vets with a very sad bundle of fluff this morning and burst into tears immediately. Thank god our vets is open Saturday mornings!!

SkeletonSkins · 07/09/2019 20:57

@SunnyUpNorth omg your recall sounds amazing!! Skeleton pup is a little too interested in other dogs and doesn’t give me a second glance no matter what food I’ve got! Defo more practice needed 😂

SunnyUpNorth · 08/09/2019 09:03

Oh @SkeletonSkins I really feel for you all. But lovely silver lining that you realised you actually quite like your pup! Hope she improves quickly.

I wouldn’t say our recall is amazing, haven’t really had a chance to practice it but I was impressed with him yesterday. He has virtually no interest in toys but is good obsessed which helps with training!
Popped him back in his crate today after the 6am wake up and he went back to sleep til 7.15, woohoo!! I’m wondering if my neighbour lets her dogs out around 6ish and if that’s waking him. She is an early riser, hadn’t occurred to me before.

loveliesbleeding1 · 08/09/2019 11:02

Can anyone advise please?Bella had her flea and worm treatment yesterday between her shoulder blades.Does anyone know when I can put her in the basin for a Bath? There was so much to ask the vet about that I completely forgot to ask.😬

lazymum99 · 08/09/2019 14:33

Loveliesbleeding I think you have to wait 24 hours. But why are you bathing her? Unless she’s rolled in something you don’t need to bath too often

Girliefriendlikescake · 08/09/2019 18:07

Poor skeleton pup hope she's on the mend soon bless her. It scares me a bit how much I love our pup, I'm not normally particularly sentimental about animals but I'm really smitten with him!!

We've had a busy wend, stayed at my mums last night and puppy was good although something frightened him in the garden so he peed all over kitchen floor instead 🙄

We took him to a dog show today, amazing socialisation as he met loads of people and about every type of dog imaginable!! He was robbed in the cutest puppy category though 😡

Look at his cute face, that's worth first prize every time right? 😉

Putanotherwashon · 08/09/2019 19:36

Awww! @Girliefriendlikescake he’s so cute. He definitely should have come first!

SkeletonSkins · 08/09/2019 19:58

@Girliefriendlikescake he was absolutely robbed! Absolutely gorgeous 😍😍😍

Funny enough we did our first bath today - she was slightly covered in wee thanks to the UTI so it was necessary. She didn’t enjoy it particularly but she was good bless her. Also left her alone for the first time today while I went food shopping. It seemed to go okay?! She wasn’t crying when I left or returned so hopefully she was okay.

She’s feeling better today. So glad the antibiotics are working. She’s also starting to calm down a bit and her lovely personality is coming out more and more.

SunnyUpNorth · 08/09/2019 20:08

@Girliefriendlikescake completely robbed!!! Who could possible have been cuter?!!

I feel like we are having a very similar puppy experience. I am also shocked by how much I love Sunnypup. It’s awful but I never really understood before how much people love their pets and now I feel like he is my new baby! I’m also usually a bit grossed out by pet germs but not by him....although obviously am washing my hands often etc.

We went for a couple of successful walks today to the dog field again and a forest. We convinced him to go in a river, I don’t think he knew if he liked it or not but he kept dipping in and out and going crazy. Was v cute. I had to hose him down on his legs when we got home which he wasn’t too pleased about 😬 but he then fell instantly into a deep, snoring slumber.

Wet pup!

Girliefriendlikescake · 08/09/2019 20:36

It must be puppy bath day as we bathed our pup today as well, the place where the dog show was is normally a horse arena and pup got covered in dirt. He wasn't too impressed but also fell straight asleep afterwards! Thanks for agreeing he should have won, it must have been a fix 😉🤣

Sunny I love that photo!! Those eyebrows 😍 he looks such a character!

Skeleton glad your pup is feeling a bit better.

loveliesbleeding1 · 09/09/2019 16:47

Thanks lazymum It was out of interest really, she’s still got her lovely puppy smell and I’ve been using baby wipes on her little paws after any mess-treading! I’m in no rush to bath her as it’s getting a bit chilly now x

Girliefriendlikescake · 09/09/2019 18:38

Seem to have gone backwards today with toilet training 😩 he has randomly pooed inside three times today!! Ffs he has never deliberately done that so God knows what's going on.

On the positive side he slept nearly 9 hours last night without needing the toilet.

We've just tried walking him tonight but he really doesn't like the rain so we ended up carrying him a fair bit under our coats 🙄

DuchessDarty · 09/09/2019 22:28

@SunnyUpNorth omg you’re puppy’s face, I’m in love!! ❤️

SunnyUpNorth · 10/09/2019 07:18

Haha thanks, he does have a gorgeous little face but his eyebrows make him look permanently grumpy.

I was just feeling smug myself about the toilet training and then had a few accidents yesterday. I think as they can go that bit longer now I forget to take him out as much. I’m considering the bells things for the door but feel like it’s just another thing to get them trained to do!

weeblueberry · 10/09/2019 10:37

Hi all - we're a wee in so WeeBluePup is now 13 weeks. He's doing SO well. Pretty much exclusively toileting outside, going into the crate at night without a peep and coming into work with me and settling into the playpen really well.

Just waiting on the penny dropping lol. He's going to need a wee jumper for our office soon though as it's freezing and his wee Whippet coat isn't going to cut it!

Calmisthemantra · 10/09/2019 12:15

@weeblueberry another whippet owner Smile

weeblueberry · 10/09/2019 14:14

His mum is a whippet but, as he's a rescue, we're not sure what dad is! Probably a Lurcher :)

SunnyUpNorth · 10/09/2019 14:51

For those with pups around 16weeks or so, how long are you leaving them for now? I’ve left mine for up to around 1.5 hours. I have a camera and can check on him. He is mostly fine, sometimes whimpers for a minute or two and then lies down again. But as it approaches the 1.5 hour mark he tends to get more agitated which I think may be to do with him needing the loo. I tend to bring him for a wee every hour or so usually.
