New dog - off food

Our greyhound arrived Sunday. Since then he's only had a few mouthfuls of food. He was raw fed so continued this with Bella and Duke raw. He took treats on Sunday but no treats today as he wasn't eating meals just one or two mouthfuls.

Going to put pilchards over his food tomorrow, or an egg. Should his raw food be warm?

Or is still just adjusting and we shouldn't worry.

We leave the food down for about 15mins then remove if he hasn't eaten.

He's got lots of energy, enjoying his walks and potters about the house making sure we all give him a pet and some love

It's common for dogs who are feeling worried to not feel able to eat - and it would be pretty normal to feel worried in a new home.

I'd leave the food down so that he can eat in a quiet moment, as and when he feels able.

As avocados said, dogs in new homes make take a while to feel safe and comfortable enough to eat. I don't know that I would leave raw food down too long for grazing but some things that might help:

• making sure he has somewhere quiet and unobserved might help him feel a bit more up to eating, as already suggested.
• room temp can make raw meat a bit more appetising so maybe getting it out the fridge and hour or so ahead so it can come up to room temp?
• the raw egg, tinned sardines, mackerel might all help add some flavour and get him eating
• raw commercial mixes have a variety of textures etc. Was he on B&D before or was it something else? We might be able to suggest something similar in texture that you could then slowly transition over to B&D from
• some greys are fed on the ground and some fed from a stand that lifts the bowl. Do you know how he was fed before? It might be the angle of feeding putting him off kilter?

I have a rehomed dog, he didn't eat much at first either. I think you shouldn't worry, don't make it a source of stress for you or for him.

As an aside, although I don't think my ddog was unhappy, it was a massive lifestyle change for him and I think it probably took him 6 months to totally adjust... He is my first secondhand dog and if I did it again I would be more gentle with the changes - luckily we got away with it and he is awesome in every way . We have left him in peace, added eggs etc

Just lift it after a while.

Friend has suggested pilchards so we're going to try those and add with rice tonight to get something in him,

Oh yes and his bowl is raised and we have tried floor too.

Pilchards in tomato sauce a winner!! Phew at least he has something in him now!!
