Has anyone tried one of these to stop their dog eating rubbish? Any other tips welcomed!

My cocker spaniel is food crazy and scavenges rubbish while out on walk- dropped food (we live near town centre with lots of chicken shops and convenience stores) tissues, packaging, any sort of poo etc etc. He is so quick on the lead and when in bushes etc he gets things I can’t see.

I was thinking of getting a muzzle to stop this but when we tried a gentle leader to stop him pulling he refused to walk at all or even leave the house.

He has managed to get away with no nasty effects but he’s ill at the moment and we are waiting for him to have X-rays and blood tests. It may be nothing to do with this but I started looking at muzzles etc online and saw this which looks really freaky but wondered if anyone had tried it.

It’s American and expensive but I have a relative there who is coming over soon so it’s doable without the huge shipping charges.

Sorry can't help with the actual problem but this made me laugh as my cocker refuses point blank to walk if you put anything like a coat on him

I know someone whose Maltese ate rocks and she used this sort of thing on him (she called it a snood - ?). Worked a treat as I recall, though a cocker and food might be harder to keep separate. :) I guess it might slow him down.
Should be pretty simple to make something like that though? Isn't it like a pillowcase made of fine mesh? It reminds me of a lingerie washing bag.

My mum used to carry a jar of Tabasco sauce to sprinkle on food and cow pats that her dog tried to eat.
That's of no help to you probably but I often wondered if local people watched her seasoning cow pats for her dog.
To be fair the dog no longer eats cow pats or abandoned food.

I should have pointed out she put Tabasco on so her dog wouldn't eat it not because she wanted it to eat spicier cow pats

My dog really wouldn’t like wearing that and even with lots of training I can’t see most dogs tolerating it

Um... my dog wears a head collar and a muzzle and there’s no way he’d tolerate that without a hell of a lot of training... and I’m not sure how I’d go about that as he’d not be able to eat with it on...

I suspect my dog would rub his face and head along the pavement to get it off him .

Is there any reason why you aren't looking at a simple Baskerville muzzle OP?

That’ll end up filthy, ripped and many dogs would freak out at having their eyes covered like that.

I’d recommend a Baskerville muzzle, basket style. Stills allows the dog to pant and drink but won’t cover the eyes and will be less annoying than that bag.

You need to start muzzle training very slowly, so the dog gets use to the muzzle.

Mine will happily wear a Baskerville muzzle. She wears a dogmatic when lead walking so I think it feels similar.
(Only muzzled to stop her chewing her feet when she gets itchy. Until the treatment works!)

Does the dogmatic fit under the muzzle?

I’ve never been able to work out if they would and they’re not cheap enough to buy and then see...

I have one too and has eaten horrific things. She is 13 now and still going strong.

She would win a gold medal in sleeping so you’d be waiting a long time!!
The muzzle goes on over the dogmatic ok but I’m pretty sure the muzzle would interfere with the action of the dogmatic. Hopefully pics will attach this time @tabulahrasa

Aye it was the bottom bit that I kind of thought wouldn’t really fit.

It’s the ultra he wears because he has a short fat face rather than pointy, and it’s the biggest size already.

It kind of does fit but I don’t think the dogmatic would work quite as well. And I need the control!

we use the "proguard softie muzzle."
took about a week for him to stop lying down in a huff refusing to walk with it on.. but he's got over it now and it's a life saver. thing things I've had to fish out of his mouth over the last year

Those muzzles are not designed for exercising, they’re for short term use, like vet’s visits or grooming. Where they won’t need to fully open their mouths.

he wears it walking the streets and then it comes off when we are in a park for running around (although it says find for play and exercising on the instructions). he can however pant/drink /bark etc in it too so there are no issues with it causing any level of restriction

Luckily after spending a fortune at the vets he doesn’t seem to have anything stuck inside him so no idea why he was vomiting then running around like a lunatic all night.

I’ve avoided muzzles because he was so awful with the head collar, but I should preserve - he’s very stubborn though! I’ll have a look at the recommendations.

According to the testimonials they can drink and pick up balls with the bag thing on!

I laughed a lot at the spicy cow pats.

Weirdly mine is ok with a sort of coat ( ie a Dogrobe towel and a Lidl Halloween pumpkin costume!)
